The Pill Saved My Skin
Guest blog by FashionistaLike every other teenager growing up, I was ignorant about skin care and all beauty regiments. As a result I had a very bad case of acne between the ages of 13 and 18 which shattered my self-confidence for a long period of time.
It didn’t matter so much in the early teens. But as I got into my late teens, I began to realize the importance of good, clean healthy skin. By then it was too late as my skin condition had become worse. I began to feel conscious of my face and on especially “bad days”, I even refused to leave the house. I could only envy my friends who were blessed with naturally clear skin and wondered why my skin was the way it was.
Everyone assured me that it was only the teenage hormones; that the acne would clear up when I get out of my teenage years and into my early 20's. Before I knew it, I turned 20 and my skin had not improved. I had taken extra care of my skin all the while but nothing changed. Then I was introduced to contraceptive pills. I visited my gynecologist for a general check up and, like everyone else, she advised me to take better care of my skin. I told her my woes and she recommended that I try "the pill." I decided to take her advice and give it a go.
The Pill changed my life and more importantly, my skin.
It contains the hormone estrogen which is responsible for feminine traits such as the shape of the body, breast development and the softness and firmness of skin. The estrogen in the Pill reduces the occurrence of acne, excessive hair growth and male-hormone related disorders. After 3 months of taking the pill I saw my skin improving tremendously. I stopped having big reddish zits popping up on my skin, even on expected days just before my period. Naturally there are side effects of taking the pill and especially for me, the weight gain was very noticeable. However I have since switched to a newer, better brand of pills which have no such side effects.
5 years on, I still have visible scars left over from my acne days. Although pimples are a rare occurrence, I still maintain my regular facial cleansing habits. I cleanse my face with facial wash twice a day (before bed and in the morning when I shower), moisturize after every wash and dutifully scrub and mask once a week. I never leave my make-up on when I go to bed, no matter how tired I may be.
I would like to share with you some of the products I use as well as a new favorite item I've recently discovered:
Kao Biore Facial Scrub
Since I don’t make it a habit to use make-up remover, I have discovered that the Kao Biore Facial Scrub effectively removes all make-up (even the waterproof ones) and is still gentle enough on my skin. I have since replaced my facial cleanser with the scrub and I use this daily without worry that my skin will dry.Oil Of Olay Active Hydrating Lotion
Oil Of Olay is a brand that has been in the market since my mom was only 16-years-old! This old but very trusted brand has since re-invented itself. Upon recommendation from my mom I decided to try it and have yet to regret my decision. It is great for oily to combination skin and I have taken to using it as my make-up base as well.
Nivea Facial Cleansing Wipes
This, I am proud to say, is my own recent discovery. It was a random purchase from the drugstore and it proved to be the best random thing I've ever done. Like the scrub, the wipes thoroughly remove all traces of make-up and purifies and tones the skin in one single step. It is enriched with Sea Minerals and Vitamin B5 and the soft fleece wipes invigorate and refresh the skin without leaving a greasy feeling. Needless to say, the wipes are absolutely perfect for my “lazy days."What facial washes do you swear by? Do you think you'll try any of these? How do you treat blemishes, acne, etc.?

Doesn't taking the pill increase your chance of getting breast cancer?
Actually being on the pill has given me a lot more acne. It's good that it helps you though!
the wipes look like they would be nice on my lazy days, too! lol
@Purple_Harlequin@xanga - I think it like increases your risk of breast cancer but decreases your risk of ovarian. Weird, huh? Don't know how you weigh those odds...
I've had acne since I was about 9 years old & I'm 19 now. I have been on the pill since I was about 16 & my skin has gotten better since then but I still have acne & the scars remain. I have tried several acne treatments & have even visited a dermatologist a couple of years ago but nothing worked for me & some of the products even made my skin worse & made me break out in places on my face that I hadn't broken out on in years. For now I stick to regular bar soap & my acne isn't too bad, I just deal with it. I would like to get rid of the scars though.
I've always had naturally clear skin (thanks to my mother and her great genes!). I went on the Pill when I was sixteen, and that, coupled with St. Ives Apricot Scrub and their Apricot Facial Cleanser have helped me keep my skin healthy and clear.
There's an Indian market near my house, and from time to time I'll go and buy a bar of sandalwood soap. It smells wonderful and leaves my skin feeling so soft!
I wish the pill worked for everyone.. but it didn't help me, and it actually made me really sick. Like violent puking type sick. Being on it long-term seems to have some nasty side-effects too (besides the breast cancer mentioned... some people have become infertile after long-term use).... so be careful.
I like the Patricia Wexler "Acnescription" line, you can get it from Bath & Body Works. My skin dries out really easily, and this one doesn't seem to do that... it's supposed to prevent aging too, so it's designed to be really moisturizing.
It certainly hasn't been my "miracle cure" or anything though... my skin's not perfect. Considering my mom had acne into her 40's, I feel a little hopeless. I mean... my skin's not HORRIBLE. But... I would just love to have beautiful, clear skin.
The pill saved my skin too. My acne was all hormonal. fun. I'm
off the pill though but now my skin seems to be under control. Sometimes I wash my face.. I use proactiv but I don't really need it. It just helps with fading the scars that I have. I use water and
vaseline to remove makeup. :P
i don't know.. sometimes I think
your skin needs a break. Most girls around 13 ask me for advice. (They think I grew up with great skin lol right) They want acne gone
instantly..Of course it just doesn't work that way. My skin improved with less washing and products. I only used water from my shower basically. I was only breaking out more because of irritation of every day use of washing. GIVE YOUR SKIN A BREAK PLZ or at least wash your skin 2-3 times a WEEK. Maybe a difference, maybe your skin needs to "breathe" longer.
"Doesn't taking the pill increase your chance of getting breast cancer?"--
Rarely, not anymore with the new formulas.
The pill actually made me lose 1/3 of my hair. Never saw a change in my skin either.
i use ivory soap and cold water. i had bad acne in middle school because i used so many products to try and get rid of them, but once i stopped, my face cleared.
I've been on three different types of pills for my skin. My favourite was Diane-35 (gave my skin a glow all the time), but I didn't want to be on that just for my skin (plus the increased risk of blood clots), so I stopped.
I found that when I cut out all grains and dairy, cut out alcohol, got more sleep, and exercised a lot, my skin has cleared up by itself and has started to really glow. To keep my skin clear and glowing, I use Cetaphil and regularly exfoliate. And I always wear sunscreen.
what kind of skin would u say you have, dry, oily or combination?
the pill did nothing for my skin lol....i mean, it was never too horrible to begin with up until last year when i got SUPER stressed out at college, but when stress was minimal in high school there really wasnt a difference.
i feel like nothing i use ever really improves my skin....like it'll clear up but a couple weeks before my period i break out no matter what i do. but i use Olay foaming face wash or something like that....it was my sister's and i took it from her cuz it made my skin super smooth =P
@lauren_lethal@xanga - Honey cures acne and scars, when used with milk and a regular facial scrub. Give it a try! Worked for me =)
@xobeautyrushox@xanga - You mix honey, milk, & facial scrub altogether & use it? I'll try that, thanks =]
I just turned 20, and I've been on the pill since I was 17(?) it hasn't helped with my acne at all... well, maybe it has helped it continue.
I'm actually getting ready to try just putting lemon juice all over my face. Its supposed to clear up acne, make your face smooth, and it also sort of bleaches your skin. That might be nice since I'm blessed with freckles. Or not, I kind of like them sometimes. We'll see how it goes.
I think it all depends on what pill you're on. Some people I know have complained that their face has gotten worse with the pill.
I noticed my skin's cleared up quite well from the pill...I've been on it for about four months. Instead of erupting into a pimply mess around my period, I only get the occasional monster or a few because of stress. It's definitely an added benefit =P
The Pill changed my life and more importantly, my skin.
^ I feel like there's something wrong with that sentence. :P
But in other thoughts, good post. I'm kind of tempted to go on the pill myself for the sake of acne & chin hair, etc. Could def go for an improvement.
what kind of acne did you have?? is it the kind you get through genes or is it just cause of teenage hormones (t-zone)??? i wanna know before i try this product.
@lauren_lethal@xanga - Yes I do =)
Don't forget to put on a honey mask before bedtime.
It may get a little messy but its worth it.
Oo, I've been looking for a new cleanser..maybe the Biore one.
The Pill helped my skin too, after nothing else did :)
This doesn't have to do with my skin, but I thought I would just ask for people's opinion..?
No matter what I do, I just cannot gain weight. Im seventeen and don't even weigh a hundred pounds. I have been contemplating getting on birth control (i'd rather get the shot than take the pill) for a few reasons. The weight gain, I hear comes with birth control, being one of them. Does it seem like a good idea, or am I just shooting at an invisible target?
As for my skin. I just moved from the desert to the beach, and apparently my skin prefered the dryer climates. I use a box set called Acnefree (that I took from my step sister). I believe I saw it at wal-mart one day though. It works very well for me.
@CrissySomedays - It depends on your skin - I use the Proactiv system because I was 19 and still having pretty bad acne; they recommend that you use it twice a day, and I think my skin might have been clearer when I did, but I've switched to once a day for the sake of time. When I cut back to three times a week, my skin got worse.
One of the most important things about skin care is to use a full pH balanced system unless you're going to buy individually pH correct products (for these, try the products at my.arbonne.com). Using just one or two products from a pH balanced line can mean you're using too much acid or base, which is hard on your skin.
what brand of the pill did you find works best
@Nicola_Six@xanga - i used Diane 35 too!
@the_true_silver@xanga - i would say combination. my nose's too dry!
@anonymouslypopular@xanga - mine's through genes. big popping reddish ones. :(
@withlove16@xanga - i have absolutely no answer for this. i used to be skinny but i've put on so much weight, and been looking for answers on the opposite scale from yours! sorry i'm not much help.
@thechangesinme@xanga - i was on the Diane-35.
