  • Short Hair on Women = Ugly?

    Guest blog submitted by JustFloatinBy

I got a hair cut recently. It does not touch my shoulders, but it's still long enough to style rather easily (it's a cross between a pixie cut and a bob). I've gotten a mix of reviews on my new look but I have to say that about 90% of comments were positive. To me, my hair looks much better than it had before. I found long hair (it used be around waist-length) to be oily and hard to maintain.

Now it looks healthy, shiny and flatters my facial shape more than my long hair did. My peers agreed; it was an improvement on my former look. I went from getting little attention from the opposite sex to even getting a little too much attention.

But the other 10%? Let's just say they were either rude or ridiculous. I was even told that I looked undignified and unwomanly. I've also been told I look like a boy and even just plain ugly.

Naturally, I was a little offended at these comments but brushed them aside. I felt much better with my new look and wasn't going to let anyone else's opinion offset that.

Do you think short hair on women isn't flattering? Would you ever cut your hair that short?

I've had short hair. Sometimes I don't feel pretty with it, but I'm sure I look good with it, haha. Most people do.

I got a short haircut about 4 months ago. i love it. I agree that it's much easier to look after, and easier to get away with not brushing, but also, it is difficult to cover up a bad hair day by just styling differently.   i think people often sort of hide behind their long hair, and I find that most girls say they wish they were brave/confident enough to do that.  when i had long hair i would get attention from random guys in the street, wolf whistles etc, which doesn't much happen now, but guys i already know well also seem to admire my daring. i like to think i have widened their ideas of what is good looking, ie not just long blonde hair and an hourglass figure (none of which i have), although in general i probably have not.

my hair is short. [it doesnt touch my shoulders]

and the feedback has been wonderful.

it flatters my face much better than my long hair.

Having short hair isn't a problem? It depends on your face shape if you'll suit it or not. To be honest, i like both long and short hair! Short hair; is great for hot days, easy to wash, stylish! Long hair; great for cold days, longer to wash but oh wells ? , and also stylish!
    (:

    short hair = beautiful!

It always depends on your face structure.

I, also back this September cut my hair at around the same length and got mixed reviews too.
My hair was the same as yours, not as long when it was long, but I did it for a change.

I think short hair could work on any woman though.  And I do not believe it makes us look anymore less womanly.  Or less attractive.

I had my hair cut into a pixie when I was in 8th grade. From that day on, I had super short hair until I graduated high school. I also heard it all from "lesbian" to "ugly" to "boyish". Of course, the moment I talked about growing my hair out, the admirers came forth with "But it looks so good short! You can really carry it off!"
I think it's great that the majority of people like your hair short and that only a small population don't. What's most important though is that YOU like it.

I do have to say though that when I grew my hair out I finally felt more feminine. Of course, this correlated with the fact that I lost weight and started dressing girlier. However, I am now back to a semi-short hairstyle and feel great about it.

In conclusion, I think short hair has the potential to be VERY flattering on a woman. It honestly just depends on the face shape of the person and how they style it. Concurrently I believe that long hair styles do not flatter every woman. So, yes, short hair can be great :]

It really depends on the person.

  • sandymora@xanga

It' depends on the facial structure and texture of the hair I guess
If you've got a round face and super thin, super flat hair... it's probably not the best idea to cut your hair short

but if any woman wants to cut her hair short because it makes her feel beautiful and its an easier style to maintain, why not?
it's not really anti-feminine and can be totally pretty

Ugly? No, not usually. Disappointing? Very much.

@RAC - I should add that short haircuts often make a woman look 5-10 years older. It's a rare chick who looks young with a pixie after 30.

    Ugly? Ugly my arse!

Short hair even looks better than long hair on some women.

I love short hair on women.

I've had my hair every length, including shaved down bald.  Why not have fun?  Hair does grow back, after all.

Some women look terrible with short hair, some look wonderful.  I can say I have never felt more feminine than I did with about a half inch of hair.  My features popped; I felt rather beautiful.

Truthfully, there were two drawbacks that I would warn any woman about:  1. Be prepared to be asked if you like Sinead O'Connor if you go super short (or, sadly, if you are treating cancer) and 2. growing it out is never fun!

Ugly? o_o No way! The most beautiful women I've seen have a VERY short hair XD (No, I'm not a lesbian aajajaj)

And I do have short hair too...It's so confortable -w-

I used to have really long hair, they went past my elbows! Then my parents got mad at me for something and they made me get my hair cut (this was a long time ago). The hairdress chopped 15 inches off :( I feel less confident/attractive without my hair.

I've had short hair since I was probably around 3 years old, I'm 17 now, and I've been mistaken for a guy loads of times, I've lost count how many. I just laugh it off, its kinda funny when it happens. But short hair is easier to maintain and take care of, plus when you get up in the morning you don't have to do anything to it. I never looked good with long hair, but it just depends on the person and preference.
