  • Curly vs. Straight: Which Do You Prefer?

    Guest blog submitted by CrissySomedays

I love volume: waves, curls, frizzes. They're beautiful.

I haven't seen many people wear their natural hair anymore. Has anyone seen ABC News investigation study over curly vs. straight? A woman had natural gorgeous curls and groups viewed her as being messy or a distraction. When people judged her as a person, straight hair had made her look cocky, so the curls won over!

Be comfortable with what you have. I love wild and straight hair.

Once upon a time, I even disliked my natural hair.  If you have curly or wavy hair, you can't easily get away with doing the same things as straight hair. I know it may seem gross but don't brush your hair. My hair is not a big dread, believe me. You don't want to brush it out because it becomes all frizzy like Hermione from the first movie... unless you're into that. Otherwise, it may scare people to grab their straighteners. Conditioner is my best friend. I detangle my hair with my fingers. I only blow dry when necessary (when I'm going out and I'm dripping water) and I use frizz serums.

If you want to cut your hair, please make sure you ask for a hairstylist that specializes in curly hair. You don't want to cut your hair while it's wet. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about!

The only way I enhance my waves is by putting my hair up in a messy bun or doing lots of braids (french braids come out cuter!). I know some people "crunch" their hair but it never worked for me even with mousse. Conair has a small selection of soft curlers you can bend and wear comfortably to bed.

Do you have curly or straight hair? Which do you prefer -- how do you tame your curls and/or how often do you straighten your hair?

I have natural curl and I wear mine both straight and curly.  If I go to bed with my hair wet and have somewhere to be in the morning then I usually will straighten it out real quick.  But if I shower in the morning I usually dry it curly.  I love my hair and love it both ways.

I can straighten mine really easily and quickly with a flat iron.

I have wavy hair. I love my hair but I like how sleek it looks straight. I usually don't do anything...except brush it, of course...to it though and it looks fine

I have very straight hair and it's.. alright.  Though, sometimes I wish that it was curly because I think curls can be very beautiful....

The last pic of Liv Tyler is so airbrushed. Not a good representation of nice straight hair either.

I was born was straight hair, but it started growing a bit wavy later in the years, and I started using a ionic hair dryer. Then half a year ago, I had my first perm and it's wearing off now so my hair looks a bit wavy now. I embrace all the different hairstyles I've had. : )

i'm black so i have naturally curly hair

however, i've had a perm in my hair since i was 13

why you ask would i allow some chemical to seep into my scalp and burn my hair straight you ask?

well because society told me that my own hair wasn't gorgeous just the way it was

well i've decided to take back what "beauty" is . i make the rules now =)

    Curly as hell!
I HATE HATE HATED it when I was younger. I've learned to tame it and work with it now and I love it. People actually know me because my hair is so unusual. Sometimes I wish I had straight hair, because it's easier to style. But I do straighten it from time to time, never would Japanese straighten though, like my friend, I think I'd miss it much. I feel like I look cockier and more bitchy with my straight hair.
    That's my 2 cents. ;]
I like a middle, straightening it then curling it to waves. :D

I like wavy hair, but I can never get my hair how I want it.
    I have naturally straightish hair.

  • shmallew@xanga

i have natural curl hair :<
i always blame my mum for bearing me curl hair.
    i love everything straight !
u know~ natural curl isn't the curl that u do in salon.
    im asian..
so unusual to have natural curl hair ....damn
straight hair is so sexy XD !

  • fuzzi_mushroom@xanga

im chinese so i have straight hair, and thats how i always have it

i love curls and messy wavy though.

i think curls v. straight is just a "grass is greener on the other side" dilemma.

everyone i know with wavy/curls wants straight and vice versa.

  • outspoken_nessa@xanga

i have straight hair but i crunch it with gel or moose.

  • monomial13@xanga

any would do as long as it'd match the look on your face

  • elittlebear@xanga

Well, in my case, I'd like to have curly hair (naturally, not permed). Coz I have thin hair and low volume, so it look kind of flat. And I think curly hair makes my hair look more puff and more volume. Also, it's easy to create style when it's curl, that can be any regular daily casual style. And for hair up do, often if one have straight hair, sometimes they curl it first before making a style.

I permed my hair before, but everyday is a disaster when I try to brush my hair. I dunno if naturally curl will have to same problem or not.

@fuzzi_mushroom@xanga - you read my mind!

@anonymouslypopular@xanga - "...asians have a different hair texture than
other races so certain products might have a different effect. I dunno
    if this is tru btw..."

I guess when it comes to coloring the hair, yes. But not sure about the gel or moss or perming...etc.

    You are not ignorant.

I've seen some hair product that help make curly hair less fuzzy, I seen them in super market.

You want your hair flat. I think my hair is too flat, haha.

  • anonymouslypopular@xanga

i never did know how to crunch curly hair to keep it flat. Could someone teach me?? I don't care if i sound so ignorant cause i really don't know. Also note that i'm asian and i just said that cause some people have told me that asians have a different hair texture than other races so certain products might have a different effect. I dunno if this is tru btw.

  • mommymissblaze@xanga

i have curly hair and i keep it flat ironed most of the time, if not i have to use tons of products to keep it from getting frizzy, to make the curls more curly...blah blah blah i like flat ironing it and being able to do easier styles, i get more attention with my straight hair too!

  • smcwsu628@xanga

My hair is naturally curly so I tame it by using sunsilk stuff...I never really straighten it because it takes too much time.

  • AnnabelJones@xanga

I have a nice full head of naturally curly hair. I used to hate it growing up, but as I've matured, I LOVE it! I not to long ago started using a diffuser, and I have to say that was one of the best choices I've made! I used to think that using a blow dryer, no matter how, would cause too much frizz. Boy was I wrong! heh.
Not to sound full of myself, but my hair always gets compliments. I guess it's something I should have embraced all along! :)

  • ozzieong@xanga

Being Asian, I have the really straight Asian hair. I love it, although sometimes I wish it had a little volume (at times it is too flat for my liking). That's when the curlers come in handy.

One thing weird about my Asian hair though is that it grows light brown, so I dye it dark brown every couple of months.

  • peacelove__CALLIE@xanga

My hair was stick straight at one point. Now its just full of body. Not curly, not wavy, but not straight either. I dont tame it. I just brush it and condition. The bare basics.

  • flightless___bird@xanga

i have curly hair. i don't mind it that much. i hardly ever straighten it, usually i just leave it the way it is. i don't really "tame" it, just when i come out of the shower i blowdry it and thats basicallly it. if i'm feeling lazy i'll just put it up or something. nothing major. maybe a tiny bit of product every once in awhile. i like it to be natural though, most of the time.

  • M_S_T_A@xanga

My hair is.... I guess straight but at the same time its kinky. Once a month I use a relaxer (straightener) because if I don't my hair becomes unmanageable. I have broken many a combs trying to get rid of the knots. Lol I would love to have long straight hair but short hair for me is easier to deal with and I think I look better with it.

  • agent_ann@xanga

super straight. i've worn it like that for fifteen or so years, so i try to curl it often to change it up a bit. maybe that's why i somewhat prefer curly or wavy hair.

  • sWiMpRiNcEsS@xanga

my hair is SUPER STRAIGHT. it can barely hold curls in for a few hours...i don't even need to straighten it, it's that tame..i cut it really short last year so curling it isnt an option anymore...but i've always wanted curly hair

  • JennySavedTheWorld@xanga

    I'm a curls girl.

    haha, but that's okay.
I get compliments like 10 times a day.
    And usually by strangers.

I used to hate it, but that's because everyone else staightened their hair.

even if I could wear my hear perfectly straight for a day,
    my curls are my trait.
and it's hard to manage, but I love it.

  • mysteriousromantic@xanga

Slightly wavy. I usually straighten it on days I want my hair plain and straight and other days, I curl them.

  • JustPeachee@xanga

i have really big, frizzy, wavy hair. Its unruly. I usually dont use any products because ive had no success using them. Any advice? My hair gets so big when I leave it be that my old co-workers called me "poof" whenever i walked by.

so i usually just tie it up or if i have the time, i straighten it.
