The weather in New York seemed to have jumped from winter to summer, completely skipping spring. The temperatures have risen into the mid to high 70s within the past few weeks. Don’t get me wrong, I have zero complaints after the winter we endured here in NY. With the abundant amounts of sunshine, it’s time to start incorporating sun care products into your daily skin care routine. While it’s nice to have a tan, it’s important to understand the sun can be extremely damaging to your skin. Too much sun exposure can lead to premature signs of aging, sun spots and even cancer.
I’m 100% Italian (mainly Sicilian) and I have an olive skin tone so I don’t burn easily and I get very dark. All my life my mom has always been very strict about wearing sunscreen and going for yearly check-ups at the dermatologist. Through the years, I’ve developed my go-to sun care products to protect my skin from the harmful rays. Check them out below!
Face: I have combination skin so I’m prone to breakouts. I only use sunscreen on my face that’s specifically designed for that purpose. Regular sunscreen is way too thick and oily, and definitely contains ingredients that I rather not put on my face. The two brands I trust for face sunblock are Neutrogena and Aveeno. Right now I’m using Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid-Lotion Sunblock. I use SPF 30 but it does come in SPF 55. This formula is ultra lightweight and leaves your skin feeling soft. Another favorite of mine is Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Lotion Sunscreen. This one smells amazing and definitely not like a typical sunscreen.
Tip: Even if your makeup has an SPF, it’s important to still wear sunscreen. After cleansing, apply a liberal amount of sunscreen onto your face. Let it set in for 3-5 minutes and then apply your makeup as usual.
Lips: Sometimes I get fever blisters from being in the sun for too long, unfortunately. To prevent this from occurring, and to keep my lips from burning, I make sure to wear a lip balm containing SPF. I use this mainly when I’m on vacation or I know I’ll be outside all day in the sun. I use Sex Wax Lip Balm SPF 23 for my lips and it’s amazing! It has a slight coconut smell and it keeps lips moisturized and protected. You can find it at most surf shops or online. Since using this lip balm my lips have never gotten burnt or that dry, peeled feeling. It’s a must-have if you’re spending the day at the beach.
Body: I typically use SPF 15 or a tanning oil (with SPF) on my body because I rarely burn and my skin can tolerate the sun. I like to use sunscreen spray because it’s easier to apply and doesn’t feel all gunky. The only downside to sunscreen spray is that you go through it way faster than a non-spray. I discovered the Panama Jack brand when I was visiting my friend in Puerto Rico and I’ve been using it ever since. I also really like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer body mist sunscreen. It smells good and leaves your skin dry to the touch. As for tanning oils, I usually stick to Banana Boat Dark Tanning Oil.
