Like Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight saga? Ever wish that there were less vampires and more aliens? Well, then you might find yourself looking forward to Meyer’s next book-to-movie adaption hitting theaters this coming May.
The Host is Meyer’s other novel sans werewolves and vampires. Basically there’s this alien race known as “Souls” who invade Earth and pull an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-esque situation. The main human character, Melanie Stryder, becomes inhabited by one of the Souls, but her brain doesn’t cooperate. Without giving too much away, ultimately there’s a weird struggle between the two personalities inside of Melanie’s body as she fights back against the invader.
Even if you scoff at the Twilight series, this one still might interest you. It’s a very different plot line — although Meyer doesn’t deviate from her standard “love triangle” formula — with very different characters. If sci-fi is your thing, you might want to give it a shot.
“It is a much deeper story than the Twilight novels,” she said. So, there’s that. And if you’re like me, you often find yourself thinking that Kristin Stewart’s role as Bella gets old. In The Host, Saoirse Ronanplays the main character. Based on her role in Atonement, I think she gives a pretty solid performance as an actress.

I thought I would be completely turned off from Meyer after Twilight, but this movie actually sounds interesting. I like the SciFi-ness of this.

I sort of liked Twilight. But I have throughly enjoyed The Host. And since The Host has been putting up videos about the movie, it has caused me to become excited about it coming out.

Twilight wasn’t bad because of the content or general plot.
It was bad because it seems as though it was written by someone with poor writing skills who has ZERO social contact in the last 15-20 years and has never been in a relationship.
…I can’t bring myself to hope that she’s socialized enough in the past few years to understand basic human interaction well enough to write anything worth reading or watching.

I loved the book, but not sure I could get into the movie…I always end up somewhat disappointed.

I thought the book was appalling, but clearly I’m in a minority.

I have the read the book, and I can already tell by the trailers, the movie will be NOTHING like the book. There are so many things going on in the book, you get to meet these amazing characters feel their struggles, sympathize with them or hate them. It’s not at all like Twilight were when you’re reading it you felt like there was a white screen, and there was just Edward and Bella.
Technically, it’s not really a “love triangle,” it’s a tad bit more complicated than that. But like you, I don’t want to give too much away. Just stamping it “LOVE TRIANGLE JEEZ MEYER HERE WE GO AGAIN” strays people away automatically.

I liked the book, I’m interested to see how the movie turns out. The thing I really liked about Twilight is that I loved the books, but I actually felt like the movies filled in the gaps that the book left behind and just created a well rounded story (Yes, I love Twilight. I don’t care.) all in all. Seeing how the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies turned out, I normally hate movie adaptations, but I feel like they’re getting better and better (Hunger Games was really good, too) at it, so I hope I’m not disappointed this time around. I’m looking forward to it!
