I think, like, 95% of the singers I like are female. It used to bug the crap out of my ex because all I listened to, in his opinion, was “girl music,” whatever that means. I don’t know, I guess I just feel like women in the industry are expected to have more skill than men. Because seriously, there are some terrible bands out there fronted by men that would not have been signed if a women had been singing that mess. That’s my opinion, at least…
I have a ton of respect for anyone trying to make it in the music biz. Living in Austin, I see a lot of people hoping to make it big that won’t because not everyone can. But I tell you what, it’s a man’s world, so I will always, always silently cheer for the ladies. Here are 5 songs performed by females that I am totally obsessing over.
Sucre’s cover of Nick Drake’s Place To Be
Yes, that is Stacy King (formally Stacy Dupree) from Eisley… another band I have loved for years and years (since they were Moss Eisley and they had that song MR.PINE <3). Also, you might notice Elsie from A Beautiful Mess’ hubby on the upright. This song was already so gorgeous and her beautiful voice does it major justice. Love.
Sharon Van Etten – Serpents
I’ve been madly in love with song for a while now… I wish there was a video for it.
Sarah Jaffe – Glorified High
Sarah Jaffe is practically a household name in the Dallas/ Denton, Texas area, but has recently blown up. She recently performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live and it was perfect. I am 100% sure you are going to hear amazing things from this girl in the near future.
Purity Ring – Lofticries
I just like this song way too much for no reason. That’s okay, right?
Hospitality – Friends Of Friends
This song makes me insanely happy… Plus Maeby Funke is in the video, and that red-headed chick from Strangers With Candy and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Winner winner chicken dinner. My day is now much more cheery now that I’ve heard this.
Are you familiar with any of these artists? Do you like any of them?

Evanescence? Within Temptation? Nightwish? Hell, even Natalie Walker?
I mean it’s not that you listen to girl music that’s the problem here, just that what you’ve selected is kinda bleh! And as for women expected to be more skilled – haha, that’s a good joke.

@katie - Oh and I almost forgot, “Farewell Proud Men” by Leaves Eyes is a good one too

Anything newer than 2000 has a very high chance of being unknown to me haha

“”Because seriously, there are some terrible bands out there fronted by
men that would not have been signed if a women had been singing that
mess. It’s just true.”
Er, no. What a silly thing to say.

You can see virtually everything as a gender-battle. Wow.

Is it true or is it your subjective opinion? I’m sure the fans of those bands would beg to differ. These bands are lukewarm at best. They sound the same. Sharon van Etten is the only one that I would give a second listen, if I was bored. I happen to disagree with you. women can get by with just being cute in the music industry. There are far more lack-luster female pop-stars than there are male.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - fair enough. Maybe I should have omitted “it’s just true” and said “in my opinion” because that’s all it is.

I listen to mostly men singers. But I tend to listen to songs for content, not because they’re male or female. I’m just picky. I guess that I tend to like songs that the males sing. The female singers (or at least, the ones that I hear on the radio when I listen to it) seem to only sing about love lost, love gained or what another female did. But I’ve also stopped listening to the radio consistently about 3 years ago. Too many commercials and it seems like the same handful of artists or songs get played every hour.

I love Sarah Jaffe! Also, I saw Sharon Van Etten this past summer at Lolla and she was stellar!

All of their voices sound the same. Although I do love Eisley and I can never get enough of staring at Stacy’s mouth. /creepy

some of them sound like that girl from the Cranberries.
I’m currently obsessed with bruno mars’ songs
I also can’t get enough of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlXlbAfxnHk
that bird cracks me up each and every time that I watch him dance. the song makes me laugh. the Rio movie is so adorable. the other songs in the movie are very catchy and one of them is romantic sung by jamie foxx. I prefer male singers singing romantic songs than females. I can’t picture a female serenading me. as for more upbeat dance type of songs; I still like justin timberlake when he went solo. his songs are so sexy. the way he dances is just so…damn hot!!!!! he makes me blush
I don’t feel that way towards females. I like singers that swoon my entire being
male kpop stars have a place in my heart, too. Se7en, Taeyang, GD&TOP. kpop stars are the triple threat; they have sexy voices, catchy beats, killer bodies, super cute faces, stylish fashion and they can dance
they please my eyes, ears and just make me happy. talented and excellent entertainers! they make all of my schoolgirl fantasies come true

I guess your motto is basically this song haha (:
I don’t think the music industry is sexist. There are terrible mainstream ‘artists’ from both genders. Kesha, Tswift, Rebecca Black, Katy Perry, etc are all pretty famous female musicians who got signed for every reason except talent.

As much as this music is beautiful, I’m still stuck on the comment made by your ex about “girl” music. As if music created by, sung by, or created for women is not deemed as simply music, but a subset genre of music that needs to be separated apart from music for/by men. Why can’t women contribute to music without being branded as “girl music” or “girl songs”?

Never heard of any of these people.
What happened to people liking artists/bands because they like them? That’s how I am with my music.
For the record, if an ex of mine criticized my musical tastes, he would need an inflatable ring to sit on.

The thing I really love about women artists is how different their voices can be! Check out Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson, Lykke Li, Imogen Heap, Florence and the Machine, Brandi Carlile, Maria Mena.. Ahhhh I could give you a list a mile long!
I think women actually dominate the music industry. Most of the artists nowadays are women (depending on the genre you listen to; I listen to a very wide assortment, the only genre men really seem to dominate nowadays is country), and I can’t say I’ve ever had a guy call my music “too girly”, but if he did, he might not have a pair anymore… ;D
