It started just a few weeks ago. Starbucks, in an effort to be more eco-friendly, while recognizing that most of the cups going into a trash can are their coffee cups, is now offering reusable tumblers for only $1. Besides the feeling good about not-wasting-perk, there are also some other perks to buying one of these plastic tumblers.
Look at that plastic shine. That’s my brother’s tumbler. I just found out about this because he brought one home recently. We’re both big Starbucks addicts; our local baristas know our names and orders by heart. They told him about the tumbler and how buying one for a dollar gives you ten cents off your next refill. Every time. So by the tenth purchase of coffee, you’ve got your money back. Good deal.
Another perk: they wash it for you. Because a lot of people were worried about germs spreading and contamination, Starbucks has reassured everyone that they will wash your tumbler with boiling water so that you can’t catch a cold from the guy in line in front of you. The inside of the tumbler has lines that show what size to fill ‘er up to for a tall or grande. If you want a venti, you’re out of luck.
This is actually a good idea that hopefully does help our environment. Only if people actually use them though. If each person gets one and actually remembers to use it, it could definitely make an impact on our resources. Plus, less litter on the street.
What do you lovelies think about this reusable tumbler? Will you be getting one?

Uh, I hate to break it to you but, this isn’t new :-/ They’ve been selling those WAY longer than a couple of weeks… More like a year, as me and my mom have some.
*Hm, I just looked online and apparently they did make this big announcement a couple of weeks ago about these $1.00 tumblers. Strange. Haha, Washington must be really ahead of the game then ;D

I hope this comes to the UK, it’s a brilliant idea!

@surveys_fortheteenageesoul@xanga - Really?? We just got them a few weeks ago as well, and we only started selling them at the beginning of January.

@xsPoNgEs_go_SQUISHx13@xanga - Okay, I guess it wasn’t exactly a year ago, hahaha. I just found the post that I made on the day me and my mom got them and it was in October xD But it certainly feels like a long time that we’ve had them..!

@surveys_fortheteenageesoul@xanga - XD Hahaha, still jumping the gun as far as my Starbucks is concerned, but definitely more understandable. The Starbucks a town away received and released Casi Cielo two weeks before us (although they got the Clover after us) so it probably shouldn’t surprise me too much.

As a Canadian Starbucks store manager, I’ll have to confirm that they came to us only less than a month ago. They should’ve thought about this years ago though.

The problem with the whole reusable tumbler thing is that you forget it at home :/ And if they’re dollar ones, I imagine you just keep buying more and have a stockpile at home.
It’s unfortunate that Starbucks (as far as I know) does not have ‘for here’ mugs like a lot of independent coffee shops, or our local chain my college town. As far as sustainability, nothing beats good ol’ stoneware.

I brought one of their version of holding their drink holders on Sunday. I actually got my drink free when I spent the $9.00 to get the holder. I’m sure it’s the same thing if you got the one for hot drinks. I love Starbucks.

@galliver@xanga - Where I live, they actually do have those ‘for here’ mugs. Not all the stores have them though. You buy your drink and say ‘for here’ or something along the lines of that, then they’d either give you your drink in a mug, or tell you they don’t have those ‘for here’ mugs.

How is the quality of the $1 tumbler? I kind of want one, but I was put off by the idea that it’d be made out of a cheap, thin plastic.

@galliver@xanga - really? You guys don’t have those? All the Starbucks in England have stoneware mugs if you drink in. You only get the takeaway containers if you order your drink to go.

@galliver@xanga - Wha? I dunno about every Starbucks around my area, but my Starbucks, the two Starbucks at the malls I go to, and my boyfriend’s Starbucks all have stoneware. In fact, today I made the mistake of handing one of our regulars a “short” (XS) cafe cup instead of his regular “tall” (S)

Washington state and a few others were used as test markets for these cups in late November through December if I remember correctly, the response lead them to release corporate wide. I still think it is a fantastic idea as the other cups are a bit expensive. I however need to buy the larger cups as I drink the ‘Venti’.

As a recent recipient of a $25.00 Starbucks gift card (people know I go there a lot), I’m going to get one ASAP. Never really thought about it till now! :-p

a plastic tumbler washed with boiling water with every reuse? uhhh i would highly recommend checking the grade of that plastic and even if it is decent, i wouldn’t recommend reusing it that many times to hold boiling liquids

@AimeeFrying@xanga - @xsPoNgEs_go_SQUISHx13@xanga - I usually judge whether a store has ‘for here’ mugs by whether I see anyone using them. And I don’t think I’ve seen it anywhere in Illinois.
But there are other coffeeshops, so it’s all good.

I’m confused… I thought they already had a program where it’s 10 cents off their drinks if you bring in your own containers..?
