Awards season is well under way with the mother of all awards ceremonies — the Academy Awards — coming up next month. Some amazing actors and actresses were nominated and most of Hollywood royalty will be in attendance. I’ve tried to keep up with these nominated films, but I can’t seem to find the time like I used to. However, I do remember see such famous celebrities in their earlier roles–perhaps sometimes once they wish people didn’t remember.

I think it’s always interesting to see how and actor has grown throughout the years. We’ve seen nominees like Daniel Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix and Sally Field in their younger days, but fledgling stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Quvenzhané Wallis (who’s 9 years old!) are just beginning their careers. It was comparing the generations of today’s Hollywood that got me thinking: Where does it all begin?

In honor of nominees past and present, here are some photos back when they were finding their footing in fame.

While some of these aren’t their first roles, it’s how I will remember some of these celebs forever. This one’s for you, Mia Thermopolis.
