I’ve always been intrigued by old photographs. Unfortunately, my family doesn’t have any of their own, and the ones that we do have date back to only the 1940s and 50s.
Looking at pictures from photography’s earliest days makes me wonder what life was like for the people in the pictures and what was going through their minds when the picture was taken. It always amazes me to realize that these people were exactly like us and that they aren’t just a romantic idea passed down through generations.
In my quest to find old photographs, I came across this photo blog called My Daguerrotype Boyfriend. Their slogan is — wait for it — “Where Early Photography Meets Extreme Hotness,” so of course I had to check it out. It’s full of old photographs, some dating back to the Civil War Era, of just really good-looking guys. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think this was so cool, but I might also be just a little creeped out. They might be attractive, but it’s kind of weird to think they were alive almost 200 years ago. Click through the gallery and decide for yourself!
What’s the verdict? Interesting or plain old creepy?

I love that my parents have photographs that are this old. It is cool to be able to look at your ancestors that lived a long time ago instead of just hearing their stories. Knowing what they looked like adds so much to the stories. On my dad’s side, there would have been more pictures had they not been destroyed in a fire. I like being able to look at the ones that still exist.

I’ve been similarly fascinated by old photos, but for some reason I’ve never been attracted to someone in an old photo. Something ridiculous in the back of my mind always tells me, “However old they would be today is how old they have always been.” Marilyn Monroe just looks like a really hot 90-year-old to me.

They are okay, lil more hipster by today’s standards with the facial hair and everything….

The guy in the main picture for the blog…he is a stud. Damn.

The very last thumbnail looks like it might be a postmortem photograph.
Otherwise, I don’t think there’s anything creepy about that– you’re a young adult girl looking at pictures of young adult men with timeless handsome faces from history.
This facial hair thing is quite a flashback. First late 60s and 70s, and now, present day college men are growing them out.

@TulleSkirts@xanga - Hm, that’s actually really interesting if it is. I’ve seen postmortem photographs before and I think the reason behind why people took them was really cool. I’ll have to do some research on that, because now I want to know!

@RWojsnis - Yeah, it is very understandable behind the reasons of postmortem photographs. Even before cameras, they relied on artists and craftsmen to create funerary portraits and masks to remember those who deceased.
Good luck on finding information on that man!
