Let’s take a trip down Memory Lane, shall we? If you’re anything like me, I bet the memories of your childhood years are colored with some of your favorite books.
I have distinct memories of my elementary school teachers taking my class to the school library for half an hour so that we could find books to take out for silent reading time. This was one of my favorite times of the day (actually any time that I can just relax and browse in a library still is, but that’s besides the point).
There were always books that my classmates would fight over and others were each kid’s personal secrets. These books have stayed with me and are ingrained in my mind as a memory that evokes those warm and fuzzy feelings. And let us not forget those magical Scholastic book sale catalogs!
I might just be a nostalgic bibliophile, but I believe that all children, at some point in their life, love books. They gather up their favorites and hold them dear to their heart. When people talk about their favorite childhood books, I often hear the same excitement and sentimentality that I hear when they talk about their favorite ’90s Nickelodeon shows.
I know that I have a box full of kids books in my attic that I just can’t let go of. Every once in a while, I’ll go check out the box and read the stories with a smile and the hope that one day I can pass on my favorites to my own children so that they can also foster a love of reading.
Check out the gallery for some of my favorite childhood classics! And click here for an even longer list if you want to extend your nostalgia for a little bit longer — I won’t judge!
What were some of your favorite books as a child?

Sometimes I wonder if younger generations go by different “classics”. Are they reading the same books we did in elementary school?
If I said Tikki Tikki Tembo-no Sa Rembo-chari Bari Ruchi-pip Peri Pembo, would they think i was having a stroke or something?

@bittersweetromantic@xanga - I did work experience at my old Primary School (Elementary) a couple of years ago, and they are reading the same books, a few added ones, but there’s still the classics.

The Bailey School Kids were awesome! I read many, many of them.

I was raised on Dahl. Charlie, James, George… oh, memories.
I have a young brother and I don’t think they read the same “classics” that we grew up on. Which is a shame, but as long as kids are reading, does it really matter? Regardless, I’ll have a great library ready for my future youngin’s.

@Super_Andy@xanga - Ah Dahl! I don’t know if I could find a favorite of his…maybe The Twits…or George’s Marvelous Medicine. I know what you mean though, for example, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory used to be required reading in 4th grade…my sister is now in 6th grade and she hasn’t read it. What’s worse? She says she saw the movie (the Johnny Depp version no less) so why should she read it? It kinda broke my heart. But, as long as she’s reading something, I guess I can’t complain.

iWhere’s Chicka Chicka Boom Boom?! Or the Berenstein Bears? Where the Wild Things Are? Or the Courderoy Bear one? My spelling is probably horrible for those books…Anyway, loved the mouse cookie one. =) Also the scary one, which I found not too long ago and reread.

Scary Stories!!! Ahhh me and my brothers would read that, trying to scare each other, or our little brother, who couldn’t read yet.

I was just thinking about Amelia Bedelia today. The one where she had to make a date cake, and she cut up a calendar and put it in the mix… I’m thinking of books to share with my 6 year old daughter.

Ahh, I loved some of these books when I was younger. I had a Rainbow Fish birthday party one year.

Great list! Only one I don’t like is the Rainbow Fish… I was never a fan of the “if you are an individual, make sure to apologize to everyone else for being unique” message.
I still own most of the Boxcar children books… great series. My absolute favorite children/young-adult book was “Dealing with Dragons” by Patricia Wrede. Also a really big fan of pretty much anything Roald Dahl. To this day, I credit Amelia Bedelia with my love for stupid puns. Ahhh, puns.
