I have battled breakouts since I can remember and have always been an oilier-skinned lady. Growing up, I was taught to live in fear of oils, which in some cases is accurate.
Mineral oils will clog the pores. Most essential oils, on the other hand, not only do not clog pores but help clear them out. Why didn’t anyone tell me this sooner? I spent years stripping my skin of precious, healthy oils only to exacerbate breakouts and increase oil production. D’oh!
I embraced oil to moisturize a while ago, but oil cleansing is new territory for me and I’m in love. My skin is balanced, hydrated, smooth and glowing. Oil cleansing removes all makeup in a flash. I honestly can’t ask for much more.
Oh, have I mentioned it’s beyond easy? (When someone says “oil cleansing method” for some reason it sounds a little complicated… not at all.) With a dry face, rub a few pumps of an oil cleanser of your choice (my personal favorite is the Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil, above) between your hands and then massage onto your face. You will see your makeup literally melt away.
Then wet your hands a little bit and massage your face again. You’ll see your oil cleanser turn into a milky consistency. After that, rinse and you’re done! No toning… I personally don’t even need to use an additional moisturizer.
I suggest using oil cleansing only at night because the oil leftover from the cleanser may have a tendency to breakdown any makeup applied on top. Too bad, because I want to oil cleanse all the livelong day!
Lovelies, have you tried oil cleansing? Thoughts?

I LOVE OIL CLEANSING!! But I make my own that works just as well as expensive store bought stuff. I do 3/4 castor oil, 1/4 olive oil. That is for acneic skin, but if you have no acne issues and drier skin it should be either 50/50 or 1/4 castor, 3/4 olive, jojoba, or grapeseed. Whatever is a personal preference. I add lavender and tea tree oil, massage it in, steam it with a hot washcloth, then wipe off. I don’t do it as much as I used to, but I do moisturize with coconut oil and my skin loves that shit!

OCM cleared up my clogged pores and broke me out badly. Not for me!

I just use coconut oil. It works wonderfully. I don’t need to buy makeup remover anymore.

I have very sensitive face skin. Would you recommend this for me? Once I find a cleanser that doesn’t make me break out, I usually stick with it for awhile. Trouble is, I feel like my skin starts to reject those things too after it gets “too used to it” if that makes any sense. I can usually use the same products for about 6-8 months without any breakouts, but then wham! It’s like I hit a road block and my skin says “nope I’m not feeling this anymore.”. I currently use a line of Aveeno products called Smart Essentials, but I think my skin is starting to outgrow it and so the hunt is about to be on for a new alternative, I would love to try this, but wanted someone’s opinion first based on my picky face.

@anniestrole - why thank you! I am actually licensed in skin care, so it is kind of my hobby to find new homemade things seeing as I dislike commercial skin care products

@Dana0825@xanga - I am a licensed esthetician, and I can honestly say that ALL store bought products whether professional or over the counter made me break out more and didn’t do good for my skin. Nothing has worked better than stuff from my kitchen. Give the homemade oil cleansing a try (see my first comment) and see how that works for you. Remember, with EVERY new product there is a 6-12 week adjustment period. Plus oil cleansing will purge your skin of bad stuff that is stuck in their from old products, so you may break out more at first, but once that stage is over you should see a great improvement

@Dana0825@xanga - My skin is the same way. I do rotation based skin care because my skin gets finicky. For when my face is really gross, I use St. Ives Apricot blemish scrub. For when it’s super oily, I use Yes to Tomatoes followed by a moisturizer. If my skin is already very clean but needing some quick moisture, I wash with Yes to Blueberries. For morning facial cleansing, I use Yes to Cucumbers.

This has worked wonders for me… I use 1/3 castor oil and 2/3 olive oil, with a few drops of tea tree oil: massage into skin for a minute or two, steam off with hot washcloth.
It makes my makeup go on way better. I add a drop of tea tree oil to my sunscreen/moisturizer/liquid foundation, and it lasts all day long.
If you have adult acne and think it will last forever, give this a try! It has been the ONLY thing that has worked for me. I think it fades acne scars, as well (dunno if that’s the castor oil, olive oil, or tea tree oil, but I’ll take it…). It took a while (about two weeks?) to see any difference, but even before it “worked” it was very relaxing.

@lyrra_askavi@xanga - thanks! I’ve used the st. Ives and say yes to tomatoes. Loved st. Ives, but yes to tomatoes made me break out horribly. I have the yes to cucumbers lotion and I love that.
