With Halloween out of the way, retailers are wasting no time at all to announce their store times and promotions for the true meaning of Thanksgiving: Black Friday. It seems that every year, popular retail stores are opening their doors earlier and earlier, but this year, Wal-Mart takes the cake. Wal-Mart stores will open their doors to shoppers before you can even trim the turkey and say, “dig in!” at 8 p.m., the earliest in history.
That’s right, Wal-Mart will be opening its doors on Thanksgiving evening. But, they are not stopping there. To reward dedicated shoppers, Wal-Mart announced certain products thatwill be guaranteed to customers who are in the check-out lines between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
These special items include:
16GB Apple iPad 2 with wi-fi for $399 (plus a $75 Walmart gift card)
Emerson 32-inch LCD TV for $148
LG Blu-ray player for $38
Of course, if these items do happen to sell out (which they will), one can purchase a Guarantee Card which again, guarantees that the customer will get the item by Christmas at the Black Friday price.
Whew! This is already stressing me out and causing my shoulders to tense.
What do you think of Wal-Mart’s decision to open on Thanksgiving? Will you be in line for the goods?

The store that I work at (Oakley) is going to be opening at midnight along with a couple of the anchor stores in the mall where we are located. Last year we opened at 6 on Black Friday. I actually volunteered to go in to work at midnight because I can be done with my work day by 10am at the latest and actually be able to spend time with my family for Thanksgiving.
That said, I think it’s kind of absurd that Wal-Mart is opening that early. It kind of defeats the purpose of spending the holiday with your family…especially since it’s the one holiday where you reflect on how you’re thankful for what you ALREADY have…

If that’s the case, then Thanksgiving day should be on Wednesdays now….

I think it’s ridiculous for Wal*Mart to be having Black Friday shopping that early. 8PM? Really? Especially, for the employees who would probably want to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends. I don’t know why stores even bother celebrating Thanksgiving. Retail is in such a mad rush to get Halloween stuff down and discounted, and immediately jump into Christmas. *sigh*

I am so disgusted by this. I haven’t been to Wal-Mart in years and this just confirms nothing has changed…Taking further advantage of employees who are barely scraping by on their tiny Wal-Mart sized lay checks, no benefits, and now making then work on one of the only “guaranteed days off” is nauseating. Not only that, they are now encouraging families who would normally be spending time with family (during one of the few times per year everyone is able to get together) to come to their store and buy their Made-In-China junk. Beyond appalled.

You know what? I don’t worry about it. Because I, just like every other person out there, has a choice of whether to be there. I hate the crowds, so I don’t got.
Wal*Mart is not forcing people to go to their sale. Wal*Mart is not forcing people to work for them. In fact, it’s insulting for people to imply that a Wal*Mart worker could not rationally choose to work and earn money for their family on a holiday. Some of them might need the cash.

@WhiteHotKM@xanga - Walmart has never given employees Thanksgiving Day off. The only day they’ve ever closed for a holiday is Christmas Day. Not everybody has a family to spend the day with.

@WhiteHotKM@xanga - They don’t shut on Thanksgiving. Here in England, the only days they close are Christmas and Easter Sunday because they have to by law. I know, I work there – I worked until 4pm Christmas Eve last year and was back at work at 8am Boxing Day.

Definitely not participating this year.

Weren’t a bunch of Wal-Mart’s employees on strike this year? Was it because of this?
