I’ve previously posted about fashion trends I don’t understand, and now I’m about to tackle another one–fake glasses. People have been sporting fake lenses for years and it’s now become a popular fashion staple. Everyone from celebs to college students are jumping on this trend bandwagon and it’s only growing in popularity.
I simply don’t understand the appeal of wearing non-prescription glasses. Don’t get me wrong, I think classes can be extremely cute for people who actually need them. It’s the people who wear them with 20/20 vision that I don’t get. I suppose they think it makes them look more fashionable, but I rarely see fake glasses and think they add to an outfit.
Plus, isn’t wearing fake glasses an insult to people who actually need them to see? I don’t wear glasses or contacts, but I’d imagine I would be offended by people who wore non-prescription glasses if they were essential to my eyesight.
Lovelies, what do you think about the fake glasses trend? Do you agree with me or do you think they’re cute and stylish? If you ever wear non-prescription lenses, what are your reasons for doing so? If you wear prescription lenses, are you offended by people who wear fake ones? Tell me in the comments below!

I wear prescription glasses and contacts. I don’t mind at all if people wear fake glasses. It’s a free country.
guest
i’ve never understood it, either. having bad vision is a medical problem. it’s like kids wearing insulin pumps to be stylish.
guest
THANK YOU! I don’t understand it either. I wear glasses because I need them. I refuse to get contacts because sticking things onto my eyeballs freaks me out, so I just stick to wearing glasses. I wish I had perfect vision so I wouldn’t need them. Worrying about my glasses breaking and getting scratched up sucks.
And to add to this note of fake glasses, I absolutely cannot stand the big nerdy hipster glasses. They look so incredibly stupid! Even attractive people look stupid with them.
guest
I hate our I think our looks stupid. Not only that but I got made fun of for most of my life for wearing glasses and now all of a down it’s cool to wear frames and pretend you need glasses what the heck!
guest
Same reason they wear fake boobs…they think it makes them look hot.
guest
It’s insulting because they look way better than I do with regular glasses. Other than that, it’s a fashion accessory like a necklace, etc. I wouldn’t wear them but if people want to who cares.
guest
Some people look better with glasses, whether they need them or not. It just depends on their facial structure. I’m one such person. I actually need mine, but I look better with glasses than I do without.
guest
Because they want to wear them.
guest
I’m not offended, but I do think its a bit unnecessary. Reason why? I have awful vision and can’t do anything without glasses, but I definitely wish I had perfect vision. It sucks always having to worry about your glasses always falling off or breaking. I look way better without glasses and if I could choose I definitely wouldn’t have them. So to people who wear fake ones for fun., I say: IF YOU WERE ACTUALLY DEPENDANT ON GLASSES, YOU WOULDNT THINK WEARING THEM WAS SO FUN

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - I’ll be the judge of that. pics plz.

I think everyone looks better wearing glasses, so I use to wear fake ones for a while last year . I don’t anymore, but I still love glasses . It’s just like an accessory these days

“Isn’t wearing fake glasses an insult to people who actually need them to see?” No. Now if people were riding around in “fashionable” wheelchairs just for the sake of a trend? Then yes. But glasses are accessories. Real or fake, they’re accessories.
guest
Fake Glasses ? I hadn’t heard of this.
I don’t know. I’ve had to wear glasses all my life, I think I’d be a little rebuffed if I found someone wearing glasses that didn’t require them. Φ ≡
guest
uhmm saying people who wear fake glasses is insulting is like saying people who have straight hair and curls it is insulting and vise versa.
guest
I’ve been told that I actually pull off the glasses look really well when I try on glasses for the hell of it/wear other people’s glasses for fun, but since I have near perfect vision, I don’t need prescription lenses.
I could buy a pair of non-prescription glasses for kicks, but so far I haven’t. Always viewed glasses as something you need to wear, not a fashionable accessory. Not going to rule the idea out because other people think it’s stupid, but I just haven’t seen the need to buy a pair when I don’t need to wear them.
guest
I don’t see how it is offensive. I have to wear glasses and while I do think it’s dumb when people wear fake glasses, it’s not a big deal and I don’t think twice about it. I do envy them, though. I wish I didn’t need glasses
guest
I’m on the verge of being legally blind, and I still don’t care if people wear fake glasses. It’s no more stupid than people wearing wool hats and Uggs in the middle of summer. What other people wear doesn’t affect anyone else, so why should anyone give a damn?
guest
It really annoys me when people wear fake glasses. It’s not offensive but I think it’s pointless. I need glasses and I can’t see a thing without them. People who wear fake ones really don’t get how impractical glasses actually are – as soon as it rains, I can’t see a thing. I can’t swim underwater without prescription goggles, can’t use a sauna/steamroom and expect to see anything, I’m pretty much blind in the shower too. They’re inconvenient, and I guess it just bugs me that people think they’re a fashion thing. Some people have to use crutches or a wheelchair or a hearing aid to get through the day, I have to wear glasses. Yet if other people wore those as a “fashion statement”, people would be up in arms. Why are glasses any different?
guest
I think it annoys me that people get offended by something so little and stupid. I am legally blind without my glasses. I couldn’t care less if people wear fake glasses. I may not understand why they would want to, but to be offended by it?
guest
EXACTLY. WHY.
total morons.
guest
They have the right to wear them even if they don’t need them.
I have the right to think they look fucking stupid.
(And I also secretly hope their vision declines eventually and they realize how un-fun it is to actually need glasses.)
guest
I need to wear corrective lenses to see properly. I am not offended by folks who wear frames, or glasses with no prescription. I do think it is kind of silly…but I guess they see it as an accessory, much like earrings or a necklace because it doesn’t serve any purpose.
guest
people can wear fake glasses if they want, and who are we to judge them? I wear glasses that look like the ones in the pic, except they are prescription and I am fucking blind without them, but how is someone to know whether they are prescription or not when just judging me as they pass by?
guest
@Pickwick12@xanga - exactly!! I wear prescription glasses that look exactly like the kind in the pics above, and someone could easily judge me and say that they are fake just because they are trendy. When in reality I am blind as fuck without them.
guest
@voodoo_flower_child@xanga - Exactly! The way I see it, if I need them, I might as well buy the kind that are trendy and look cute. Maybe it’s because I have bad eyesight, but when I see people in glasses, I never assume they’re fake. I just assume they need them like I do. I don’t care either way, but it’s just not something that would ever even cross my mind.
guest
You sure they’re fake? I know some people wear fake glasses, but more people need them than you’d think! I have the trendy big frames, but it’s because I’m blind as a bat! They look like the fake ones that people buy, but they’re 100% real!
My vision is almost twice as bad as the cutoff for legal blindness, so I’m speaking as someone who really knows about needing glasses and contacts, and I totally get why people want to wear fake ones! Glasses are a cute way to change up a look. If I didn’t need them, I might get fake ones anyway because I think they’re cute. Glasses also add symmetry to the face, so they can be very attractive if someone gets the right shape for their face.
Bottom line: I totally don’t care if people wear fake glasses, and I might do the same if my vision was perfect.
Edited to add: Maybe the issue here is that the OP feels like needing glasses is a disability (leading to us feeling offended if people wear fake ones). The thing is, most of us who wear glasses and/or contacts don’t really feel that way. For the majority of us, glasses have been a part of our life since early childhood, and we’re totally used to them. It’s not an impairment that usually causes us a lot of grief, and even for us, glasses end up being as much a fashion statement as anything. People wear colored or circle contacts, and I don’t find that offensive as a prescription contact wearer. Fake glasses are no different.
guest
I think some people have the bone structure to wear fake glasses.
I have had glasses since elementary school. I’m blind as a bat without them. I never really gave contacts a try because sticking things in my eyes freaks me out, and I really don’t play sports. I think contacts would be pointless for me.
Although, it can be annoying when people with perfect vision wear fake glasses. I mean they have no problems swimming, or showering. And they see just fine, and read fine print. Whatever.

Irony: Reading a post about fake glasses the day I didn’t put my contacts in and forgot to put my real glasses on.
It’s my longest day at school (about 10 hours), and it’s a blurry one today.

@lianO_Owang@xanga - Haha that’s how I feel about my contacts; I’m constantly terrified that they’ll fall out or fold or rip while I’m driving/walking/existing.
However, I definitely still think it’s fun to wear glasses! I hate my prescription ones because they’re so grossly thick, but I like fake ones because they look nice with what I’m wearing yet my peripheral vision isn’t blurry and horrible.
guest
@samescobar – glasses can look cute on some people, but the ones without lenses are a little weird cuz they don’t even provide protection
but to each their own

I have had glasses since 2nd grade. I rarely wear contacts because they hurt and dry out my eyes. If I could I would NEVER wear glasses again. I never understood why someone would want to wear fake glasses, they are annoying and cumbersome. But I would never stop someone or be offended because everyone is their own person. Personally I hate glasses and they suck, even if the pair I have is cute, they just annoy me. People who don’t wear glasses don’t understand how it is to wake up and have to grab glasses to be able to see, I wish I could remember what it was like to wake up and be able to see everything!
guest
I ask my friends, who wear glasses, if they’re terrified of losing their vision. Is it scary that your eyesight gets worse each year? I really cant imagine what it’s like. I think people who do need prescription glasses are justified in feeling offended. It must feel like people are making a mockery of their handicap. Fortunately, designers are capable of making the crutch a bit more aesthetically pleasing by giving you thousands of designs. I just cant imagine paying so much for it, and having to renew your prescription every year because it’s killing your eyes and making them more and more useless.
I think fake lenses can be fun, even for people who need prescription glasses. You can buy all the styles you want, cheaply, and just wear them with contacts. *shrug* I guess just be thankful your condition isnt* worse.

same frickin reason you put on earrings or style your hair, prick
if wearing non-prescription glasses as accessory is seen as an insult to those who needs prescription lenses, then do swimsuit models flaunting their beauty in magazines meant to insult those who are not physically appealing? Or does it mean those who wear contact lenses meant to hide the fact that they’re visually-impaired and feel ashamed so they must hide it from the population?
i’m offended that a college student into popular culture can be so stupid

I’m not offended but I feel it’s a bit odd that people wanna wear fake glasses, but hey, they do what they want.
guest
I don’t find it offensive, but I do find it to be rather stupid.
guest
It makes my eyes look bigger.
guest
I agree, this trend is so fucking stupid and people who wear them and dont need them annoy me.

@heart_leigh@xanga - “it’s a free country” … this must be one of the most retarded excuses I’ve read.
guest
@P753159@xanga - How is the author being a prick? The people wearing glasses for pure fashion (because glasses, in its fundamental state and original purpose is for eyesight) are the pricks. And the people calling those who disagree with such are the real pricks. Ironic.
