This summer, my sister introduced me to an iPhone app that has literally changed my life: Shazam. I know, I know. I’m super late. But In my defense, I only became a member of Team iPhone in June! Since then, I’ve been Shazam-ing songs left and right. Considering I don’t have the best memory, this app is a God-send! I’m pretty sure it was made specifically for me.
Yes, lovelies, I was that person. You know, the one who incessantly asks, “ERMAHGERD! Who sings this?” or “What’s this song called?” However, I always lacked either a pen and paper, or the attention span to record the information I needed.
Now that I’ve entered the twenty-first century, I’d like to share the songs I previously YouTubed to find (or chant incessantly after watching hours upon hours of MTV and VH1) and those I’ve recently discovered with help from Shazam. Grab your headphones and enjoy!
1. “Tell Me” by Groove Theory
Ah, classic ’90s Neo-Soul. I had to start this countdown off with my all-time favorite song. I say that because it found me or should I say it haunted me because I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out who sang it! After literally humming it to every person I knew, who would have guessed one of my closest guy friends knew it all long. *Face palm* Thanks, Matt Matt.
2. “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” by Stevie Wonder
This is my most recent Shazam and I can’t get enough of it! Stevie Wonder does absolutely no wrong in my book. I swear, I groove so hard to this song it feels like my head is going to fall off!
3. ”Too Close” by Alex Clare
We’ve all seen the commercial for the new Internet Explorer. For those of you that don’t know the monstrous jam that is blasting in the background (like me), whoomp, there it is!
4. “Together Again” by Janet Jackson
Funny story. During my senior year of college, I was studying with my friend in the cafe in the library. However, our beloved barista Erik (who just so happens to be OBSESSED with Ms. Jackson) was in the middle of a Janet jam session. Needless to say, no studying was done and we left the lib asking each other, “Who sings that song?”
5. “Canned Heat” by Jamiroquai
Not only was this song the finale of the ballet movie Center Stage but who could forget it in the infamous dance sequence from Napoleon Dynamite. Oh yeah, me. But I remembered!
After hearing this song on the radio once, I could only remember the chorus. Worst. thing. ever! Now, I think of it whenever I spot a cutie…like Maxwell! *swoon*
7. “You Sent Me Flying” by Amy Winehouse
College flashback part II: During my freshmen year, the resident DJ of the House of Black Culture and my upperclassmen big brother, Corey, introduced me to this jam. Known for vibrating the house with his raucous music, Corey never let me forget Amy’s classic song as her voice emanated from his booming speakers.
8. “Send It On” by D’Angelo
This song stays on heavy rotation on VH1 Soul. Someone explain to me what I always forget it? And no lovelies, this is not the video where he’s in the buff. Keep your pants on!
9. “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes
I probably got on a lot of people’s nerves screaming, “HEY EY EY EY, HEY EY EY, I SAID HEY! WHAT’S GOING ON!” But it was the only way I could remember this ’90s classic.
10. “Chariot” by Gavin DeGraw
When you’ve asked your friends, “What’s the name of that Chariot song?” repeatedly, eventually you become the one that gets tuned out.
Have you had music deja vu, lovelies? Tell me what songs you’ve forgotten and remembered!
