Back in the early ’00s Christina Aguilera held the title of “super-ripped pop star” along with other big names such as Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. And while all these ladies have had weight fluctuations that have caused tons of scrutiny (kids will do that to you, duh tabloids), none of them have have called themselves “fat”…until a recent interview where Christina called herself as a “fat girl.” Huh?
Though Xtina had a toned body for her first few albums, she eventually “got tired of being a skinny white girl” after her 2002 album Stripped, and thusly put on 15 pounds. Unsurprisingly, her label wasn’t too happy about it:
They held an emergency meeting for the 15-pounds-heavier Aguilera and told her that nobody would buy tickets or albums until she was back to her ‘toothpick-thin’ weight, so she dropped it for her Back To Basics tour.
Now, however, it looks like Christina is done trying to please the bigwigs, which she told them during the recording of her new album:
I told them during this Lotus recording, ‘You are working with a fat girl. Know it now and get over it.’ They need a reminder sometimes that I don’t belong to them. It’s my body. My body can’t put anyone in jeopardy of not making money anymore-my body is just not on the table that way anymore.
I’m sure you can understand why I’m a bit torn here. On one hand, it’s absolutely awesome to see a pop star reclaiming her body and keeping it at whatever weight she wants. We can only hope that more celebrities follow suit. On the other…”fat?” Really, Xtina? She may have put on a few pounds (check out that top photo: she still looks amazing), but girl is far from being fat. If women start seeing her weight as fat we’re going to have even more body image issues on our hands. So perhaps she can find a better choice of words next time. [via Jezebel]
What do you think of Xtina calling herself fat?

I think that she looks beautiful, now.

Meh I think she can call herself fat if she wants. I think a lot of girls will be offended by her calling herself that only because they will automatically compare their own body to hers and feel fat too, which is just silly. Ladies, stop pushing society to validate your body. Christina’s comment was a reflection of her view of her own body, not yours! Don’t take it so personally. Validate your own by means of your own and leave it at that.

I think she used the term ‘fat’ as a way to throw it in the management’s face. She doesn’t perceive herself as fat, but her label does. Since she wants to stay in her comfortable zone of weight, she’s telling them, “Look, I’m going to be what you call fat and you can get over it”.

I love her to death, she’s one of my favorite singers of all time, but she really does look terrible compared to her previous years.

I’m a fanof hers because of her talented voice not because of how she is shaped…and in my opinion, she’s finer than ever!

i don’t think she looks bad with the extra weight… and she is not “fat”… however, i do think she looks horrendous in the revealing clothes that she wears…

I expected to roll my eyes at this post, but her statement is awesome. What a great way to tell her management and everyone else to fuck off.

The same way Fat Amy calls herself fat “so skinny bitches don’t say behind her back.” lol.

I think she looks great.
If she wasn’t a celebrity, nobody (er, nobody sane) would see somebody her size and consider her to be overweight.

fat is an adjective, not a pejorative. we all have fat. we all *need* fat. We really need to stop demonizing the word.

She is much heavier than what she was at the beginning of the career, but she is not heavy by society’s standards of heavy. She can call herself what she wants, if she feels she is fat and is okay with it. Another commenter mentioned that us, as women, should not look towards others to validate yourself. Personally, I find her figure to be very womanly–I just hope she will choose to dress her new womanly figure in clothes that are flattering.

Context is everything. Her record label once told her she needed to lose weight to sell records, so she heads them off by declaring that they would be working with a fat girl and they need to get over it already. Doesn’t mean she thinks she’s fat, only that she acknowledges the record company has made too much a big deal over her body.

Can we all take a step back and think about the fact that Lovelyish asked us how WE feel about what SOMEBODY ELSE said about THEIR OWN body? No celebrity owes us a politically correct statement to make us feel better about our bodies by what they say about theirs.
I mean, it’s implying that Christina Aguilera has a moral duty to tailor her words ABOUT HERSELF for others and that masses of women are utterly stupid all at once.

@TiredSoVeryTired@xanga - @WaitingToShrug@xanga - agreed agreed.
She’s calling herself fat by media standards. They had to sugar coat the word by asking her to drop a couple pounds, so she threw it right back in their faces and said it for them.
I think her figure is amazing. If this is her new healthy weight then let it rock. Motivates me to work out more and be healthy myself.

The way she used the term ‘fat’ doesn’t seem like she really thinks that about herself. It sounds like she’s just annoyed with the people she’s working with.
I think she looks damn good.

She’s big. I always think that now but am afraid to say it out loud cuz people will stone me lol. Guess I can say it here as you asked.

I wish she wouldn’t call herself fat when she obviously isn’t, but some people will say anything for attention

I think she meant it subjectively, as she was speaking of her label. You know, how like there are “plus size” models who aren’t plus size at all? She seems to have been using it for emphasis, for her label to understand she doesn’t want to be some toothpick.
That being said, duh, she’s not actually “fat”. She’s ultra curvy, but overweight? No.

she looks wonderful
