Nothing like a good old fashioned goth costume for Halloween! From Siouxsie Sioux to Theda Bara, one of these famous goths is sure to be
of inspiration. For the most part, all ten of these costumes could be done using five things: a black wig, white powder, black eyeliner, red lipstick, and black clothing. This takes me back to my gothzilla high school days … in a good way!
1. Theda Bara
This film star was the first to popularize the “vamp.” Her most popular role was in Cleopatra as “Queen of the Nile” in 1917. Sadly, there are only a few seconds of footage that survived but the costume stills are to die for! Miss Theda Bara is the perfect Halloween inspiration.
2. Lily Munster
Can’t overlook this classic babe. Yvonne DeCarlo may not have thought this would be her most memorable role but it is and I love her for it. Since she is an undead vampire in the show, her look definitely channels Vampira but with a slightly softer touch. You can get this look fairly easily via thrift store and be one of the most bad a** babes ever.
3. Siouxsie Sioux
Nothing like the 80′s for endless goth inspiration, take miss Siouxsie Sioux for example. If you have dark hair that can be teased into oblivion, then this costume should be a walk in the park. With some fishnets, bangles, hairspray, and eyeliner, you can be the gothic 80′s princess you’ve always wanted to be. Peek-a-boo!
4. Morticia Addams
I personally think Angelica Houston played this role better than Carolyn Jones but that’s probably because Angelica Houston is one of my favorite actresses of all time and I’m biased. With a long black dress, a cheap wig, and some fake nails, this look can be yours on the cheap!
5. Wednesday Addams
Mini Morticia is the most adorable goth girl of all time. Whether the original or more modern version, Halloween is the perfect time to be your inner Wednesday Addams.
6. Elvira
Proof that whatever the question, a tight dress is the answer. She has some serious goods that many of us (me) do not have but if you’re a busty girl (or have a great push up) this costume is sexy and relatively easy to put together.
7. Nancy (From The Craft)
Fairuza Balk was my middle school girl crush. I absolutely was not allowed to watch The Craft when it came out but that doesn’t mean I didn’t! Like most of these looks, a black wig and heavy goth makeup are crucial. A leather jacket, black boots, and tons of Madonna jewelry wouldn’t hurt either!
8. Vampira
Her fame all started with this costume. It was meant to be inspired by Morticia Addams and caught the attention of television producers and she only got more famous from there. Rumor has it that Mae West fired Vampira in the 40′s for upstaging her in the Broadway show Catherine Was Great. Cut up a long sleeved black dress, put on your black wig, and be the sexiest 40′s star on the block.
9. Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice
The release of this movie with my childhood couldn’t have been more perfect. I must have watched it five hundred times, obsessed with Winona Ryder’s character as Lydia Deetz. Someday I will work those pointy bangs in Halloween style.
10. Robert Smith
If you have the goth tools: dark hair, hairspray and goth makeup, you can be The Cure’s lovecat in no time. Bonus points for really ugly pants and platform boots!
Which of these famous goths would you be for Halloween? Have you ever been any of these characters before? Pics or it didn’t happen!

I’ve never dressed up as any of these characters/people, but it would be cool to dress up as Morticia or Elvira. I saw Cassandra Peterson last year in her Elvira get-up at a comic con, and she looks really good!

Oh, Purrleasse! Do people REALLY need to have to ask for inspiration, in an attempt to look DIFFERENT? I mean, that kind of defeats the object! Surely, looking different is all about originality?
As one of the original 80′s Goths (Yep, I’m that old, folks!!) I can tell you that for me, Goth was all about originality. The point was NOT to try to look like somebody else. O.k.! Maybe us Goth femmes had a fow icons, whose dress-sense lead us to want to experiment, too. But the idea was never to duplicate their look, full on. NO, it was about individual interpretation. Perhaps I’ve got this all wrong, but to me, fashion is about self-expression. It’s about your own personality, reflected in your choice of styling. Still, I’ve never really been one to bother dressing up for Halloween. Probably don’t need to try! The pic I’ve sent is me, as I look NOW. Morticia – eat your heart out!!
