You know when you were younger and you made dresses for your cat and then took pictures of him in a bunch of stupid poses? You guys did that too, right?

Well apparently, it’s been happening since the 1800s! Since the time cameras were invented, people were just as obsessed with cat pictures as we are today. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

Harry Pointer, an English photographer born in 1822, was one such cat-obsessed person. His life work was to take naturalistic pictures of cats, until he realized that it was much funnier to take pictures of cats doing human activites.

But it was a later photog, Harry Whittier Frees, who really escalated the art of the animal photo-shoot. Sometimes using deceased kittens, he would dress them in human clothes and pose them in impossible positions.

More of Frees’ work, including puppies!

In his own words:

“Puppies are tractable when rightly understood, but the kitten is the most versatile animal actor, and possesses the greatest variety of appeal…The native reasoning powers of young animals are, moreover, quite as pronounced as those of the human species, and relatively far surer.”

I don’t know what to think. Is it horrible if I admit I think these are the cutest pictures ever? But dead kittens? That’s creepy.

I guess I’m just glad to know that enjoying kittens dressed as humans seems to be in our genes. I’m not crazy!

What do you Lovelies think about these… unique photographs?
