As much as I’m dying to try the new dark-lip trend, I’ve always had some serious issues with buying makeup. Who wants to worry about the scary chemicals in a trillion-dollar tube of not-quite-the-right-shade lipstick?
Anybody else feel the same?
Well, if I had known how extremely easy it is to make lip gloss on my own, years of beauty department melodrama could have been avoided! Read on to create an easy, natural and customizable lip balm with ingredients from your own kitchen.
What You’ll Need:
- 1/4 cup fresh berries (I used raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, but cranberries would look great for fall!)
- 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
- 1 Teaspoon Honey
- 2 Drops Vitamin E (optional—it’s good for moisturizing lips, but I had none on hand)
Bring all the ingredients to a boil on the stove, smashing up the berries as you do. I let the mixture boil for about five minutes before removing from the heat. Let it cool for about 10 minutes, and then strain the berry chunks out. I tried to use coffee filters for this part, but it didn’t really work. My tiny attention span couldn’t be bothered to find a different straining method, but I guess picking around the seeds isn’t too hard once the goop has cooled a bit.
It didn’t turn out as dark as I’d hoped, so next time I’ll try adding more blueberries. But I can’t complain — I have a new pot of lip gloss that cost nothing and only took minutes to make! Tastes good too!
Would any of you Lovelies give homemade lip gloss a try?

how do you preserve it? it seems like a nice way to grow mold. the honey will stave of the bacteria for a while (they don’t like the osmotic pressure), but they’ll grow in it after the mold. I probably wouldn’t keep this more than a week (maybe 2 in the fridge), so this makes this a fairly pricey thing to make isnce you’d have to make it often, but I might try it the next time I make a berry vinagrette. These strainers are super cheap and everyone should have one in their kitchen. It’s a kitchen staple. Also, fresh beets or purple carrots would give a more intense color than berries. The beets would give a pinky color like what you achieved, just more intense. The purple carrots would give the “wine” color you are looking for.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t keep it for too long…or I guess you could freeze it to get a few more days out of it?
And I’d definitely give purple carrots a try!

I would have mixed cherries with shea butter, and a drop of pomelo seed extract (natural conservative ful of vitamins). I did it one tme, but it was for a photo shoot so…
I like the idea, but I’m not sure it will last long in the pot. My homemade cosmetic are lasting around one month with conservatives.
But I have an idea. You put oil, honey and berries (vitamins, moisturizer and natural scrub) : it s a perfect body and face mask ! Just put it a few minutes on your skin, and then rince. You’ll have a so soft skin. (you can add lemon juice for the complexion).

I have a book for making natural beauty aides. My lip regime when not wearing gloss or lipstick, which doesn’t last very long, is bees wax, body oil, vitamin E oil, from the capsules, and a few drops of peppermint, or whatever kind of flavoring you like. I like my body oil to be almond oil. I agree about the honey, as it’s a growing culture for all kinds of things once you’ve added your fruit to it. And for those of us who are much much older, okay, only me, we have to have a routine that keeps lipstick or colored gloss from bleeding, and some lipsticks are better than others. L’Oreal is really really good.
