Happy Caturday! With the election coming up (less than two months away, so I hope you’re registered!) it would be quite fitting to politicize your weekend fuzzy feline destination. Meet Tuxedo Stan, the cuddly Canadian cat that leads the “Tuxedo Party”. He plans to run for mayor of the Nova Scotian town of Halifax and his inspiring platform would definitely intrigue your everyday house-cat.

From its Facebook page, the Tuxedo Party “… is a political movement aimed to improve the welfare of felines in HRM ‘because neglect isn’t working’.”

Owners Hugh and Kathy Chisolm of Halifax adopted Tuxedo Stan, now 3-years-old, after he was born to a feral mother. They launched the Tuxedo Party to raise awareness of the feral cat population in their city. The problem has worsened over the years and the Chisolms are seeking to control the population and also provide homes for the unfortunate kitties.

Although a cat cannot legally run for mayor, Tuxedo Stan is successfully promoting the issue through his Facebook page which already boasts almost 2,000 fans. Here is a formal announcement he posted yesterday:

The reason I got into politics was to convince Halifax Council that we need a program to deal with the cat problem in our municipality. My brothers and sisters are starving, freezing to death in winter and reproducing at an alarming rate. We need a program to address these problems. We need a low cost spay and neuter clinic. We need a comprehensive Trap-Neuter-Return and Care program. We need a sanctuary for homeless strays to live out their in comfort. WE NEED A MAYOR WHO CARES…BECAUSE NEGLECT ISN’T WORKING!!! Vote Tuxedo Stan.
