Much has been said about Chris Brown since he physically abused Rihanna before the 2009 VMAs. Some call for his retirement from music, while others insist that Brown should be forgiven. It seems that one UK retailer is of the former opinion, because they have been selling copies of Brown’s album that feature an announcement stating that he beats women.
Most advisory labels are directed towards parents who want to protect their children from vulgar language or themes. This one, however, is aimed at the general public. It’s likely that these were put on the CDs by anti-domestic violence groups. Nonetheless, the HMV stores don’t seem to have pulled them from shelves. But the label apparently didn’t do much damage, because “despite negative reviews, Fortune, which was released in late June, debuted at number one on the album sales charts both in the UK and here in the US.” [via Gawker]
What do you think of these stickers?

Lol, oh HMV UK. This is not being done in Canada’s HMVs, and although we are no longer part of the UK chain it’s likely that it wasn’t issued by head office.

Wait… That doesn’t make sense. From what I can see, the label says “Warning: Do NOT buy this album! This man beats women.” But if they don’t want anyone to buy the album, then why are they selling them..?

And they don’t have labels on Rihanna’s CDs that say, “This woman kissed her abuser”?

@surveys_fortheteenageesoul@xanga - they have to, pretty much. HMV is the main CD store in the country, and so far as I know, they have to sell all the chart albums by law. They can’t refuse to sell a CD on “principle” – it’s not like they’re a small local store, they’re a nationwide chain.

@surveys_fortheteenageesoul@xanga - It says in the article. “It’s likely that these were put on the CDs by anti-domestic violence groups.”. HMV didn’t put the labels on themselves.

@AngelAsh_86@xanga - Because that is blaming the victim

Ugh, this disgusts me. His musical life and personal life are two completely different, seperate things. You don’t have to boycott his music if you like it just because he physically hurt somebody. Should you abuse your significant other? No.
Also, it doesn’t matter the gender of who he abused. You want to stand up for womans rights, actually hold them fucking equal to mens right. If you want woman and men to be equal, you can’t criminalize someone worse for abusing a woman than a man.
A lot of other artists have gotten in fights before, why doesn’t that matter? Shouldn’t these groups be against all violence, not just gender-baised?

@AngelAsh_86@xanga - O yes, let’s blame the victim? That makes sense.

@thatkyliegirlx@xanga - How are they gender biased? He beat her and gave her a black eye. If she did that to him, I for one wouldn’t be impressed with her either. And part of not supporting him, is NOT supporting his music.
Have you seen the picture of Rhianna after what he did to her? http://static.thehollywoodgossip.com/images/gallery/battered-rihanna-picture_512x377.jpg That’s not somebody I wish to support.

@MyPublicSite@xanga - I’m not blaming the victim. Rihanna didn’t deserve to be abused like that. However, why do you think it’s okay for her to kiss her abuser? I’m not impressed with her right now.

@AngelAsh_86@xanga - But her kissing her abuser didn’t hurt anyone, except herself. So really there is no reason to be upset. And especially not a reason to put a label on her album denoting her so.
