When most couples break up, they break up for good. They part ways romantically and don’t get involved again. Some couples, however, love to break up and get back together and then break up again–and maybe get back together again.

They are on and off so many times that nobody can keep track of their current status. Sometimes, its possible for a couple to work on their issues after a break up and emerge with a stronger relationship the second (or third) time around. Other times, however, a second attempt at a relationship is even more disastrous than the first. Here are five celebrity couples that constantly go back-and-forth.

1. Rihanna and Chris Brown


The singers maintained a somewhat low-key relationship until their domestic violence incident in February 2009. Afterward, they broke up and Brown was issued a restraining order. Rihanna has hinted multiple times over the years that she’s not over her ex and recently admitted to Oprah that she still loves him. They also kissed at the VMAs last week despite Brown having a girlfriend, so it’s tough to say where their relationship is headed.

2. Jersey Shore‘s Ronnie and Sammi


An entire season of Jersey Shore pretty much consisted of this couple’s volatile relationship. They constantly fight and frequently break up, but always end up back together.

3. Kat Von D and Jesse James


The tattoo artist and Sandra Bullock’s ex have been engaged twice, only to call it off each time. Their last engagement only lasted a month, but something tells me we’ll see them together again.

4. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth


The Last Song costars first began dating while filming the movie in summer 2009. They dated for more than a year before breaking up, only to get back together and break up again. They finally rekindled their romance for good (hopefully!) and are now engaged to be married.

5. Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen


The O.C. starlet and her actor beau got engaged in 2008 only to call it off two years later. They have since gotten back together and recently purchased a new house. Perhaps another engagement is in the near future.
