Famed fashion designer Betsey Johnson went bankrupt this year, leaving some to wonder how (or if) her eclectic line would be affected. Johnson is known for a sort of “messy prom dress chic” that resounded with fashionistas for years…but not recently, it seems. Bankruptcy, however, hasn’t changed the overall look of the line; its Spring 2013 collection featured the usual bold prints, bright colors and kooky looks of past years. But is this woman-child fashion sense getting old and tacky?
I’ve never known how to feel about Betsey Johnson. On one hand, I admire her daring sense of design, and her willingness to take risks in the fashion world. She also has a number of party dresses that are near-perfect for a fun night out. (I scooped this one up for $20 at a thrift store.) On the other hand, however…I just don’t like most of her stuff. A lot of it is nowhere near classic, and I would even describe a good portion of her collection as “gaudy.” There are a few pieces in this line that catch my eye, but most of it makes me want to keep my wardrobe simple.
What do you think of Betsey Johnson, Lovelies?

So glad I’m not the only person who doesn’t see the appeal of her clothing line. I’m really not into frills, sparkles, and whatever else is going on with her stuff. It honestly looks tacky and cheap to me. Props to her for being old enough to be my grandmother and still doing splits and having fun (I guess?) but I just can’t get down with it.

Whoa, I need to get my mind out of the gutter. I read the caption in the first pic as ” BET SEXY JOHNSON”…. and I was confused as to what it meant ;>_>

I have to say that I’m more into her accessories. But I think fashion is more of what the individual enjoys.

I think bits of her designs, individual pieces like the sparkly black pants or the shoes on one of the lingerie models or most of the accessories, and her dresses are adorable. Anyway, these runway show outfits aren’t usually showing what you’re to wear in public, so even if it seems gaudy the way she put them together, the things themselves aren’t really that bad.

I love that floral duffelbag<3 I like some of her dresses and purses…. like you said though, a lot of her stuff def comes off looking guady

Her accessories are wonderful because they’re dainty, contained versions of all of this madness. I would wear a few of her pieces, but never together — a jacket here, a shirt there, but never styled like this. The hair and make-up here also isn’t helping her keep things “classy.”
