I absolutely love autumn. It’s a gorgeous season: there’s a huge array of naturally vibrant colors everywhere, the air gets coolly crisp and my favorite holiday is just around the corner in October. Plus, there are suddenly amazing fashions all over the place! As I’ve mentioned previously, I’ve spent the last four falls in southern California where there really isn’t a drastic change during this season (or any other, really), so I am incredibly excited to be able to justify getting a bunch of cardigans, sweaters, coats and thick tights.
On that note, here is a list of some of my favorite outerwear for fall. It includes some if-only-I-had-enough-money-for-that choices as well as the totally affordable ones because I really hate those compilations in magazines that only have items $400+ (and call anything under $150 a “steal”).
1. Cat Sweater, $25
I really, really like cats, so the second I saw this, I knew I had to have it. It’s adorable, thick and colorful — everything I look for in a good sweater that will carry over to winter wear. And if cats aren’t your thing, H&M also has a sweater with a bat on it in grey or red, a dollar sign one in purple and a lovebird option in cream.
2. ModCloth Rose to the Occasion Cardigan, $35
Channel Jackie Kennedy with this gorgeous pink cardigan. It’s light, it’s adorable and it could dress up just about any outfit. I love the polished gold buttons and navy trim, but my favorite part is the element of double pockets on each side; they definitely add a cute, unique touch.
3. Forever 21 Contrast Striped Cable Cardigan, $24.80
Okay, so I admittedly have this weird obsession with Americana everything when it comes to clothes. For six of the seven years my hair was blue, I avoided wearing red and white so people wouldn’t make fun of my continuously patriotic garb; for the last year, though, I dropped the charade and have totally binged on anything with these colors. This sweater is the absolute perfect Americana choice for the beginning of fall as it’s light, soft and has the cutest trim on the pockets. Plus, it also comes in navy in the event you’re like me and try to wear as many clothes as possible that won’t be ruined if you spill on them!
4. TopShop Knitted Panel Stitch Cardi, $76
I love this cardigan’s simplicity: it’s thick, functional and beautiful. Its pockets almost drape, which I love, and the subtle pattern of the knit makes it perfect to pair with either a much more patterned item or a completely solid outfit.
5. ModCloth Fireside Finery Cardigan, $55
I have always found ballet-chic to be such a gorgeous thing, in addition to it making me extremely envious of all actual ballerinas. I love the way this lightweight cardigan wraps around and ties with a pretty pink ribbon. It could double as both a casual going-out piece as well as something to just lay around in at home when your place is a little chilly. It also sort of reminds me of a strawberry sundae, which could explain my instant desire to have it.
Deep ivy is one of my all-time favorite colors for any season, but fall especially seems to offer loads more options in it. This piece zips up in the back which, for some reason, I find strangely appealing. It also comes in mustard, shown at the top of this post, which is one of my other beloved (and universally flattering!) hues.
7. Phillip Lim KA-POW Comic-Print Sweater, $425
This is the one on this list that if I had some crazy high-paying job, I would buy in a heartbeat. It’s adorable, baggy, comic-inspired and vibrant. Buuuut alas, it’s way out of my price range, making it the least affordable option on this list.
8. MMC Green Perforated Poncho Knit Sweater, $25.50
Baggy sweaters are great for fall because not only are they usually flattering (especially if you’re bloated), but they also allow you to wear something else underneath. So, in the event you get too warm at work or while at a party, you can simply take it off and toss it in your bag, especially if it’s a super lightweight one like this. I also love the vibrancy of the emerald color, though it also comes in tangerine and yellow for even brighter looks and cream for a more subtle one.
9. H&M Cardigan, $35
Burgundy, autumns “it” colors, is everywhere. I personally love it as a color for tops more than bottoms, so I’m a huge fan of this cardigan. Pairing it with shorts or a skirt and tights would be a great option, but it’s a great length to wear with jeans, as well. Plus, it comes in light beige, beige and black, so if maroon isn’t your color but you love this style, there are other options.
Lovelies, what are your favorite picks for fall? Do you already have a signature one from a previous year that you’d love to share?

I miss the What are you Wearing Wednesday posts, seriously. Those were fun.
These were definitely cute. I haven’t quite decided on my looks for Fall yet as my cash is non-existent and it is still 90 degrees outside. I hate that I am expected to look professional everyday. They should wait until it coold down.

I get my cardigans from Old Navy. I spend less than $30 (even after tax, thanks to AZ) and still feel like I’m fashionable.
I recently got two polka dotted sweaters. One in navy and one in orange. But it’s still in the 90′s and 100′s here. I think it might a couple of more months before I really need it.
