Anyone who had a crush on Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez, please raise your hand! Or… slam your hands maniacally on your keyboard! Yes, as I presumed, everyone just broke their keyboards. EV-ERY-ONE! Benny was the best player among his friends who formed a camaraderie through baseball one hot and lazy summer in the early 60s. When The Sandlot was released in 1993, it became the quintessential story of youth, friendship and pasttimes and still holds a place our hearts. The hilarious and quirky cast of young baseball fanatics that you grew to love have reached adulthood and some stories aren’t as heartwarming as you’d hope. But don’t worry – Benny won’t let you down.
The boys of summer are now men. I had three crushes among the team – Smalls, The Jet, and Yeah-Yeah – and was curious to see what happened to my future husbands. I’m glad Benny, who the boys called “The Jet”, has led a promising and admirable life since The Sandlot.
Mike Vitar, who played (the remarkably named) Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez, retired from acting when he was a teenager. He has been a fire fighter in Los Angeles for a decade now and looks as heroic as we remembered him. This makes me love The Jet even more.
