I’ve had a difficult relationship with my hair for as long as I can remember. It’s long, thick, curly and extremely difficult to take care of. Every time I get my hair cut, the thought of chopping it all off crosses my mind. I think of how easy it would be to wash and style, and let’s be real, I’m always looking for ways to make my already short beauty routine even shorter.
Plus, I feel like cutting my hair would be freeing in some way, because I wouldn’t have a huge mane weighing me down. Despite all the time I’ve spent fantasizing about short locks, however, I’ve never had the guts to actually go through with the big cut.
In my eyes, chopping off one’s hair requires extreme bravery. I’m jealous of short-haired girls because they possess this bravery, and I obviously don’t. We live in a society that says long hair is beautiful and feminine and short hair is masculine, even though this isn’t true. Thankfully, there are many celebrities who are proving to the general public that short hair is awesome by rocking adorable pixie cuts and bobs. Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams and Emma Watson are only a few actresses that come to mind.
When I think about the reasons that keep me from taking the leap and chopping off my locks, I can’t pinpoint what exactly is holding me back. Emma Watson reveals in the new issue of Glamour that she faced criticism from men after she got a pixie cut in 2010.
“If I had it my way, I would have just kept it short forever,” she said. “Of course men like long hair. There’s no two ways about it. The majority of boys around me were like, ‘Why did you do that? That’s such an error.’ And I was like, ‘Well, honestly, I don’t really care what you think!’ I’ve never felt so confident as I did with short hair —I felt really good in my own skin.”
I really admire girls like Emma who disregarded men’s and society’s opinions about her hair and had the hairstyle she wanted. I hope one day I can be as brave as you short-haired girls!
Long-haired girls — do you wish you had the guts to go short? Short-haired girls — was it hard to go from long to short or have you always had short hair? Do you ever wish you had long hair? Tell me your thoughts in the comments below!

When I was a child, every time I got a hair cut I got a bob to my chin. I couldn’t ever get my hair to grow past shoulder length until I reached high school, when I liked a boy who liked long hair. Because I had always wanted long hair, I finally was able to let it grow out. I kept it a little above butt length for a few years, and then I cut it the christmas break of my freshman year of college. I cut 11 inches off. Now, I keep it about that length..but some days I do wish I could cut it shorter. My reasons for not are because my face shape is one that would look fat with really short hair.

I have had short hair in the past and it definitely was freeing. It was easier to manage and quick to style. The thing is, I would definitely love to go short again, but I’ve never found a short hairstyle that suited my round face.

I’ve had it both ways, I really liked it short but its not really socially acceptable and I tend to get misread when I have short hair.

I went from having hair as long as yours in your profile picture to a chin length bob. It was great and I loved it! Then I decided I wanted to go even shorter (~2 months ago); so I got a pixie cut. It didn’t look very good at first but I learned how to style it better. I like my short hair on me, it looks cute. But it’s also very annoying because the hair at the neckline grows out really fast and I have to keep getting my bf to trim it for me LOL.
& I know exactly what Emma Watson is talking about! My bf doesn’t like my short hair as much as he likes my long hair either.
I’m trying to grow my hair back into a bob…it’s short but also very girly and feminine and much easier to style (pixie cuts are really difficult…your hair basically does what it wants). You should try a chin length bob! Judging from your profile picture, I feel like our face shapes are similar and I feel like you would look really good with a bob. Personally I think bobs are the cutest :>

I’ve had my hair short and spiky like a boy’s, a cute pixie (which looks some what odd with extremely curly hair such as mine), a bob that I adored, and now it’s about shoulder length-ish. This is my favorite length because I can straighten it and appease my boyfriend or I can throw it in a pony tail/bun for comfort on lazy days. I’m currently trying to grow it out for our wedding next spring.

I’ve been daring quite a few times and cut my hair really short – and by myself too! Most of the time it was a really spontaneous decision, just me being bored and wanting something different with my hair, which was both a good aaand a bad thing, that I was that daring with my hair and didn’t take the time to think about anything, haha. But I will say that it is definitely an incredibly freeing and liberating feeling, cutting your hair short, and it does give you more confidence and feel lighter without all that hair weighing you down, especially in my case because I have really thick, coarse hair (which is part of why I cut my hair short). I think for the most part though, I’m done with short hair and would like to keep it at medium/shoulder length hair or maybe even try growing it out longer than that. Like most everyone else on here mentioned, short hair doesn’t work the best with my face shape and it actually makes my face look kind of chubby. Plus, I HATE that I can’t put my hair into a ponytail or messy bun when it’s short. Oh well, I’ll always remember fondly the days of short hair

I have had my hair both long and short. Currently it’s long, and goes halfway down my back. It’s been about 6 years since I’ve donated ten inches to the Locks of Love foundation. (I always want to do that, and it felt good donating my hair to someone in need.) I think most guys prefer long hair because it looks more feminine. Having long hair is a lot of upkeep in itself. I have to use equals amounts of shampoo, and conditioner. That way my hair doesn’t look greasy or dry. And I use detangler when I get out of the shower. When I had my hair short, it was easy to maintain. And I did’t have to worry about brushing, and all the tangles. Both short and long hair have their advantages and disadvantages in my book.

I’m glad I cut my hair and went for short hair. It’s just so much easier to handle and take care of. Unfortunately, I’m growing it out again. I personally don’t wish to but it is my sister’s wish that I have long hair for her wedding and hair takes a while to grow, so I’m starting early. After her wedding though, I’m going back to short hair. She wants me to have long hair long term but the way I see it, I’m meeting her half-way.

Emma Watson
I’ve never had a problem with going really short. I just loved it so much I would do it every few years. But now I’m growing my hair out really long – It’s almost mid-back now. This is the longest it’s been since I was 12 haha.

I keep mine buzzed down pretty close. I shave it completely bald in the summer. If you’ve never felt a summer breeze blowing across your bare scalp, you’re missing out.

I’ve always kind of wanted to try a pixie cut, but I’ve always been too afraid to try. I had a bob for about two years and am just now growing it out (it’s about shoulder length at this point). I like the way my longer hair looks, but it’s always in the way and I hate taking care of it.
Maybe someday I’ll get up the courage!

I just cut off about 14 inches of my hair a few weeks ago and donated it. That was part of my motivation, if not for me then for a little girl who CAN’T grow her hair out.I went a little longer than Emma Watson. While I don’t necessarily regret it, I don’t love it either. Like you said with having to spend less time on short hair….WRONG! I thought so too, but I spend more time on my short hair. I have THICK hair, and I get bed head all the time. So with my short hair, bed head becomes a real problem. Unlike with long hair, you can’t just throw it in a pony tail and go. I also miss braiding my hair. I really like braids, but they’re kinda difficult to do with 2 inch hair. Lol. So I am in the process of regrouping my hair. I will probably go back to short again sometime in the future.

I had uncontrollable hair just like you and cutting mine off was the best decision I ever made! I was scared because of the whole guy’s not liking it/ I was afraid it would look bad on me AND everyone I asked was telling me not to do it. But after it was done, everyone agreed that it was definitely the right choice. My self-esteem went up like crazy. I’m growing mine out again, now, but I did cut it pixie short after having long hair for all of my life until sophomore year of high school. But as I’m growing it back out now, I know I have the option of cutting it short again and I don’t have to be afraid. I started growing it out for my boyfriend but I ended up really liking it as it reached medium length. I’m trying to grow it out a little bit past my shoulders to kind of test the waters so to say.

The girls I have known with short hair are extremely confident…I like that as well as the look…

I have always been a long hair person. I didn’t get my first haircut until I was eleven years old. (It was four feet long by then.) My hair is currently down to my waist and I like it that way. Every time I get it cut, which is only to shoulder length, I regret it as soon as I see girls with longer hair.

I’m too lazy to maintain long hair, so every time it grows halfway down my back, OFF WITH THE HAIR! That means I go Emma Watson-short every two or three years (without fail since 7th grade, about a decade now; did it again this January), cutting off around 12 to 14 inches depending on how long I wait. I don’t care because it’s just hair and will grow back, but my mom and friends always despair each and every time. I think it’s hilarious they care more about my hair than I do. I never hesitate when I make my salon appointment. Even the stylists freak out and ask me three times before actually doing it. Who cares about what’s “fashionable”? You wanna do something with your appearance, whatever floats your boat!

I had medium-length hair for a while, but I cut it into an a-line a few years ago.
I loved showing my neck, really. Sometimes I really, really want to boycut it… But I’m afraid I’ll look way too much like a boy. Especially ’cause I want to spike it, aha.
Right now it’s… Well, some of it’s shoulder length, and some of it’s shorter. Like… The bang & front area. It’s kind of weird but I’m trying to grow it out before I go into basic training so I can put my hair into a full bun or whatever.
When it’s longer like it is now, though, it’s almost never down. I hate it on my neck.
I actually really with I could do half & half. I want to buzz the side of my head and keep the other side about two or three, maybe four, inches longer.
But…. Doubt I ever will. And if I did, I doubt it would look good.
Really wish I could pull it off. My favorite look on girls who can really pull it off.
(If I had thick hair with maybe any kind of wave in it – I have really thin, bone-straight hair – I would love to have long hair. So pretty, haha, and you can do so much with it! Love playing with hair. c: )

I think every woman should have short hair once. Just to see what it’s like- you learn about yourself, and silly as that sounds. About 8 years ago my hair was between my bra line and my shoulders, and one day without any real planning I went into the bathroom and cut it all off and then shaved my head with the shortest clipper setting. It was SUPER liberating, although the day after I freaked out a little. People were definitely taken aback at first- but for me, I had been through a lot of trauma the 2-3 years prior, and I just felt like shaving off all my hair was awesome symbolism for moving on and the fresh start I was making. And I would never have known what an nicely shaped head I have! Interestingly, when my hair was pixie length (which I don’t think looked that good on me), I got a lot of attention from guys. I think I carried myself with more confidence when it was super short, because there was no hair to “hide” behind- I just had to go for it. I actually found myself more flirtatious, more friendly, more outgoing than any other time in my life- I got asked out a lot!
It’s been almost a decade since that, and I doubt I’ll ever go that short again, mainly because my husband would be sad. And because now with a preschooler and baby on the way, I value the convenience of a ponytail too much to cut it past ponytail length.
Anyhow- go for it!!! You’re only young once, and hair grows back, and all those cliches!

My guy is different from the majority of the male populace. I have really long hair and have joked about cutting it all off (just because that horrified most boyfriends and guy friends in the past) and he said, “I think you could pull off a pixie cut.” That was not a reaction I expected. It’s nice knowing I could do practically anything to my hair and he’d still think I look pretty. I think I’m going to keep it long for now, just because I’m a chicken. I also like that he calls me an elven princess with my long hair. xD He’s a LOTR nerd, so there ya go.

That pixie cut is really adorable, I have never heard of this before ! My G/F is very fond of and has short hair. I’m gonna show her this post so she can see how lovely this is and maybe she can get it next time. Φ ≡

I would never ever ever do it, I love my long hair, I’m not crazy about short hair and I don’t think it has anything to do with my step mom cutting it in a bob when I was in kindergarten til I was in 3rd grade cuz it was easy to handle, I’d just wake up and go cuz my hair is straight anyway, but I’d rather deal with my hair.
It looks great on other girls, but definitely not my thing.
I love headbanging and twirling it to metal music XD

Halle Berry has been rocking the short and sexy look. but yeah I love have short it is easy to maintain.
