The latest installment of the Lovelyish fascination with vintage photographs: Sword swallowers! Proof that a woman can do anything if she’s wearing the right pair of bloomers.
I have no idea why I love these pictures so much, but I do. It’s so interesting to see these performers doing something so dangerous, but still dressing very feminine. Most of the photos are from the 1800s, the time of Susan B. Anthony, Charles Darwin and aaaaallllll the corsets. So it kinda makes sense that the swallowers would want to appear very stereotpically girly (for the time) despite their dangerous job. And I must say, they rock the ruffles, flowers, and long necklaces very well!
I’m a sucker for old-school circus culture, so all of these portraits definitely appeal to me. Sword swallowing is a pretty risky job, and it was probably even riskier back in the day these photos were taken. But these women did it anyway, pausing to pose for these pictures. These pics also have the appeal of tattooed women from a different time — they were behaving scandalously for their time, but today they would be considered total badasses. Hooray for living rebelliously!
Does sword swallowing freak you out? Do the girly outfits of the performers soften the effect of what the swallowers do?
