Happy Labor Day! Props to all the people who are going out and barbecuing today. But please please PLEASE do not grill on ones like these!
In a weird way, I admire people who take on challenges like building their own barbecues. Some of my cousins actually grew up on a farm, and went on to become welders and chemical engineers. They raised animals, were homeschooled for years, and largely took care of their own needs. The independent, DIY attitudes they had growing up translated into careers where they continued to make things for the betterment of many people. And isn’t it that independent, persistent spirit what we’re really celebrating on Labor Day?
I admit, I love this one. That might be more due to my love of VW Beatles, but whatever. Even if these grills are dangerous, I love the fact that people are building them. This holiday’s meant to honor all the people who work hard for a living, often at jobs that require a lot from them. We’re honoring the independent spirit that’s at the heart of any DIY project. So maybe grilling food on something you made yourself is just the right way to celebrate. Even if it is a bit sketchy or dangerous…
Happy Labor Day, everyone! Put a veggie patty on the grill for me. [via Huffington Post]

I think you just have to go with the flow. My favorite place to grill is this place in the middle of nowhere. There is a small pit surrounded with rock and old brick, with a random piece of metal grill from god knows what. Works great.

I think there’s something wrong with the mentality that if something is ‘hacked’ or DIY’d or homemade, it’s automatically unsafe; not that it’s automatically safe–if you make it, you’re responsible for its safety.
Using a shopping cart as a grill-grate, not a good idea (you have no idea what the coating on it is or what kinds of impurities are in the metal and will leach into your food). That last one, though, is definitely a picture of a grill-grate, and who cares what it’s supported by! I can see nothing inherently unsafe about the car one, either, although it would depend on the details of the construction that aren’t visible in that picture, so I can’t say one way or the other.
