I’m sure by now everyone has heard Taylor Swift’s new song, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – I know I hear it all of the time. After release of this new song there seems to be one question on everyone’s mind – which ex did she write this about?? Rumor has it that Jake Gyllenhaal happens to be the subject of this new song, but we don’t really know for sure.
However, Taylor Swift isn’t the only one that has written a song out of revenge for a former ex. Many other artists either scorned by their ex or deeply upset. So, in addition to Taylor’s songs, I have for you 5 Revenge Songs of the Scorned!
It was reported that Katy’s song Part of Me, was written about her ex-husband, Russell Brand. At least the timing of the release of that song was accurate.
Alanis Morissette “You Oughta Know”
Although it’s never been 100% confirmed, her song You Oughta Know, is clearly about her long-time love Dave Couilier, whom you may know from the ’90s show Full House.
Adele “Rolling in the Deep”
While Adele herself has yet to confirm this truth, it was reported that not only was her award-winning song, Rolling in the Deep written about her ex and fellow musician Slinky Winfield but pretty much her entire album, 21. She is now happily expecting her first child with beau, Simon Konecki. Take that!
Justin Timberlake “Cry Me a River”
Oh the woe’s of young love. Back in the day (ok maybe not so far back) when Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were dating, they were head-over-heels for each other! When she broke his heart, however, the scorned former ‘N Sync member wrote Cry Me a River. Ouch!
Pink “So What”
While the other celebs may have not been so obvious and some only speculation, Pink definitely made it clear that her ex (at the time) Carey Hart was the reason for her song So What. In the video, she not only cuts down a tree with their names on it (as the picture shows), but he appeared in the video! Of course, that didn’t last; they’re still married!
What are your favorite “break-up” songs?

I really dislike that Taylor Swift song! The first day of its official release, the radio station I listen to (I listen to it at work because it is free and the music streaming websites cause problems for my computer), played it once every hour all day! I am surprised any guy would still want to date hear knowing that she exploits them, and she is not bashful about it. From your list, I rather like Alanis Morisette’s You Oughta Know and Adele’s Rolling in the Deep.

Here are my top 3…
Carrie Underwood’s Before He Cheats.
Reba’s Turn on the Radio
Sugarland’s Stuck Like Glue (ok not really a break up song but I still love it)

“Taylor Swift isn’t the only one that has written a song out of revenge for a former ex” Oh no! Your so right! She’s wrote a bunch. Not just one. <3

I remember when they made a big hoopla on MTV (when it still played music >.< ) about the actress in JT’s video being blonde-haired and looking fairly similar to Britney Spears. Adele, every time I see her it just makes me smile. She’s so beautiful!

@babybug329@xanga - They had that song on replay at a mediclinic while I was waiting to see a doctor, I still cringe thinking about that song.
@LadyGwenivere@xanga - I love Sugarland! and that Reba song is great
so is Carrie Underwood for that matter lol, All American Rejects “Gives you Hell” is good too, and In The Rough by Anna Nalick.
Okay I have a huge list so I will stop here

Part of Me was not about Russel Brand, she wrote and planned for the song way before the divorce. The timing of the release gave the song more attention which was a smart move.

I don’t get how shes exploiting them when shes not putting their names in any of the songs she writes, or puts out any personal information. Heartbreak is one of the biggest forms of inspiration. Give her a break, geeze…

@UnconventionalButterfly@xanga - Agreed.

@UnconventionalButterfly@xanga - actually, in some of her songs she does give enough details for us to be pretty certain of who she’s talking about. “dear john” and “better than revenge” are the best examples. there’s also “back to december” and “enchanted”, but those aren’t really badmouthing anyone. i love taylor, but i do think that she should do her best to keep the negative songs anonymous.

@danaenicole@xanga - I guess i’m not so into it that i’m looking into the lyrics for clues to who its about. Honestly, its kind of creepy that people are so obsessed with her dating life that they’re trying to figure out the lyrics, to find who it is then blaming her for it.

@UnconventionalButterfly@xanga - i don’t either; i just hear these things. but with “dear john” she specifically says that she was 19 in the lyrics, so it’s not hard to look back at whom she was dating at 19 who happened to be named “john”. and i think “better than revenge” came out shortly after there was a “big scandal” because an actress stole her boyfriend, so that was pretty obvious too. most of them are just speculation and i agree that it’s creepy that people are so desperate to find out whom she was talking about. it’s none of our business.
