When Madonna went from emulating Marilyn Monroe as a “Material Girl” to crooning crowds in a cone bra, the world was amazed by her effortless style reinvention. Since then, flipping the fashion script has become a staple for many of Hollywood’s hottest stars.

For instance, Gwen Stefani stepped on the scene as a pink-haired punk princess and evolved into a retro crimson-lipped stunner. This tactic not only shocks and stuns but it also keeps fashion magazines aflutter with cutting edge trends. While making such a radical style switch does increase a celebs risk on ending up on E!’s “Fashion Police” as the ‘Fash-hole of the Week,’ here are some funky fashionistas that did it right.

1. Miley Cyrus

Her recent bun chop shocked more than just her Disney fans. Since her “Hannah Montana” days, Cyrus has gone from a squeaky clean starlet to a fierce fashion force to be reckoned with.

2. Rihanna

The Bajan beauty has had so many hairstyles alone in the past four years to make your head spin. From her long brown locks from her “Pon De Replay” days to the black “Umbrella” bob to the Ronald McDonald red curls, no one knows how to keep us on our toes quite like Rihanna.

3. Emma Watson

Another jaw-dropping chop was sported by Emma Watson once filming for the final “Harry Potter” film wrapped. Although her medium-length locks complimented her face, the chic pixie cut cast a spell on the fashion world.

4. Nicole Richie

Who would have thought the girl that sported multicolored mangled hair and ill-fitting clothing would go one to not only have her own ’60s inspired clothing line but also be a judge on NBC’s “Fashion Star?”

5. Solange Knowles

While her older sister may be the biggest pop star on the face of the earth, Solange Knowles stole the spotlight when she traded in her braids for a full on ‘fro. Along with her new coif, Knowles also adopted a more Afrocentric look.

What do you think of these fashion switcheroos? Were you as surprised as the rest of the world when these stars changed their looks?
