We’re all familiar with the infamous term “cougar,” which applies to older women who date younger men. But what about younger women who date younger men? Well, we all can now sleep well at night, because some creative genius has coined a term for such lades: “cougarettes.” So what celebrities are considered cougarettes? Click here to find out!
Selena Gomez, 20, is seeing Justin Bieber, who is 18. The couple has been together for two years, making her 18 and him 16 when they started dating. (This fact caused a bit of controversy when they shared a hotel room together in 2010.) Their age difference is causing people to slap the “cougarette” label on Selena, and you can click through the gallery to see even more women who are being labeled with the odd term! What do you think of this new term? Is it fun or just dumb?

Thats ridiculous. You aren’t a cougar if you date someone 2 years younger, and that requires a 10 year difference.

blah blah blah who cares? seriously?! I love lovelyish and read daily but even I have to say this article is really annoyingly pointless.

A two year difference is not a big deal. They don’t call women who date me a few years younger cougars. In order for a 20 year old to be acougarette she would need to be going after 10-12 year olds which would make her a child molester.

Stupid. Why are we being pressed to date people exactly our own age? Or is it just that women should date older men, regardless?

@crazypassions@xanga - Thanks for the input! I think it’s awfully silly, too; I just wanted to see what everyone else thought about it!

@akinnison - ha I know. I don’t blame you for posting it, it’s just annoying that this is what the world cares about these days! hahaha

Oh you social norms, you. It seems like the “acceptable” dating pair is a guy and a girl who are the same age, or maybe a guy who’s a year or two older. Anything else gets a sad label: cougar, cradle robber, etc. Or worse, people assume you have some reason for wanting to date someone who’s significantly older, so you get even sadder labels: gold digger, sugar daddy, etc. Yay for the world we live in!

It’s always interesting to consider that when you are younger, even the
slightly age difference kinda matters. When I was a teenage, it would
have been really weird to date anyone more than 3 years older than me.
But once you are in your 20s and beyond, a few years is nothing. I get
the spirit of the term, and when you are under 20 and a girl, it will
always be a bit odd dating a guy more than a year younger than you.

Haha, silly

Two years? Controversy attracts readers which attract advertisers which equal dollars. So if there isn’t any real drama, media invents some.
They can call it whatever buzz word they want, but it’s a tempest in a teacup, in other words not even worth noting.

If you’re from the same generation, the label is incorrect. And “controversy”? Sharing a room doesnt mean anything sexual occurs. Makes you wonder what those writers be thinking about. LOL
