Author, John Green, is known both for his heart-wrenching novels and the goofy web series he does with his brother, Hank, on YouTube. And while the show, VlogBrothers, is usually hilarious with a touch of inspiration, John turned it around in an open letter to students returning to school, and gave a truly inspirational speech speckled with his trademark comedy.

For many of us, the new school year is just around the corner, and for some people, that’s not a cause for celebration. John Green understands that. And he also wants you to understand why you should get over it.

Of course, he says this all in a comprehensive and intelligent manner, without being pretentious or condescending, which is what makes this letter so great. Somehow, by the end of the video, you really start appreciating all of those Calculus classes you sat through and hated (or is that just me?). When you look at the big picture (all of human history), it becomes apparent just how important our education is, and just how amazing the future will be because of it.
