School’s just around the corner, and I, for one, am determined to do everything right this semester! Cheap textbooks? Check. New shoes? Check. A lifetime supply of highly-caffeinated tea? Check. But the one thing I’ve yet to do is decide how to decorate my room. Last year, my roommate and I covered so much of our room in paper that I thought we’d get fined for being a fire hazard. This year, though, I’ve found these awesome DIY decorations that’ll make my room awesome without killing an entire forest.

1. Chevron Shoebox Paintings


Even if you’re no artist, this project is easy and fast and uses the lids of recycled boxes as canvases. Real canvases work just as well (better, even), but where’s the fun in that? Plus, every time you look up at your wall at these upcycled paintings, you can feel just a little bit better about all of the paper coffee cups you go through in a week.

2. Customized Chalkboard

Chalkboards are, like, the most quintessential college item in existence. Profs use ‘em for academics, and students use ‘em for anything but. Now you can make your own in any color and shape you want with this recipe for homemade chalkboard paint. Super easy to do, and really awesome if you’re one of the lucky ducks who’re allowed to paint on the dorm walls. Just watch out for chalk dust – it gets everywhere!

3. Removable Decals


Mess-free and totally customizable? Why doesn’t everyone do this? From plants and animals to favorite quotes and song lyrics, there’s very little you can’t do with these wall decals. And with the beauty of the internet, you can find a stencil for virtually anything you want. And unlike the rather unfortunate stains my roommate left on our carpet, these are easily removed.
