One thing I love about movies would have to be how fashionable they are. The hair, makeup and the style always seems to be put together effortlessly and look absolutely amazing!
But sometimes wardrobe and trends in movies aren’t always that great. In fact, some of these older movies, like one of my favorite 80’s movies, Heathers, may have been considered “fashionable” then, but not so much anymore — especially with the big hair!
I’m sure everyone has heard of Pretty and Pink with Molly Ringwald. It was probably one of the best teen movies in the 80’s, but it makes me wonder where these fashion ideas came from. You don’t see polka-dot prom dresses at the prom anymore, do you?

What was your favorite unfashionable movie?

I don’t know why I was expecting to see more recent examples of unfashionable costuming in movies. However, the answer to your question would be “Sixteen Candles”. The so-called hot chick looked like a 40 year old soccer mom would today.

Spice Girl’s is a great movie? Really?

Uhm sorry to point this out but a lot of these movies are the kitschy styles of their respective eras so I’m not seeing why they constitute such bad fashion…

I love the big Lebowski! I’m pretty sure the characters in there are supposed to be badly dressed and pretty sloppy. I thought it was hilarious to see Jeff Bridges in jelly sandals.
The prom dress wasn’t my favorite in Pretty and Pink, but I can see how it was fashionable for that time and it did contrasted with all the other outfits she wore. I actually like some of her granny-chic clothes in that movie. Her love interest, Blane, looks pretty timeless.
Hehe I also like the preppy outfits in Heathers, but a lot more from different scenes.

Pretty sure you just said they were fashionable for their time. And considering how frequently fashion evolves, it makes sense that many styles just won’t hold up. Which begs the question: What’s the point of this post?

In the 80′s, it was all big hair and loud outfits. Very typical of that time. You can’t expect anything less. Twenty years from now, people will be making fun of today’s fashions. Anyway, I loved many of the coming-of-age movies like Sixteen Candles, and The Breakfast Club.

Never seen any of these movies. And all fashion is weird, no matter what time period it’s from.

When I look at the fashion from these time periods, I try to think like someone from that era. We just have different standards now.

Great movies? Spice world?
Sorry, you lost me.

All of the fashions in these movies are either a) the product of the time period they were made in (i.e. Pretty In Pink) or b) Intentionally tasteless/kitschy (Austin Powers, The Big Lebowski).
Future generations will look back on us someday and wonder why all the men wore their jeans down below their ass and why the women seemed to think that leggings were acceptable substitutes for pants. They’ll laugh at us until our looks become “retro” and therefore cool again. And thus, the fashion world comes full circle.
