Personally, I think this cover’s pretty cool. Artistic nudes in general just fascinate me in general, probably because I’ve done them a lot as a model. They’re very fun to do, and they usually show off the beauty of the human body. Any human body at all…
So excuse me if I’m not exactly thrilled that these covers were banned in one way or another. They’re art in my eyes! But a lot of people were offended by these covers (the first was covered up unceremoniously at a New York newsstand, and the latter was deemed “inappropriate” by customers in Tucson, Arizona), probably for different individual reasons.
This story actually comes on the coattails of a bigger story: The latest cover of the magazine Dazed and Confused has officially been banned in seven countries due to its cover, featuring the rapper Azaelia Banks smoking a condom like a cigar (sorry, I couldn’t find an image). To me, the banning is interesting because DaC is a fashion magazine — probably the kind that you would probably expect to have the most cutting-edge, risqué cover in the aisle. If the covers from these kinds of magazines are banned, how much freedom does the entire industry really have?

What do you think of these covers? Do you think they’re offensive, artistic, or that it’s all just a matter of taste?

I remember when Demi Moore did that cover. When I was growing up, women tried to hide their pregnant bodies instead of celebrating them. After she did that cover, it totally changed maternity fashion. It was awesome.

REALLY? Two innocent people in love holding their beautiful new baby boy is “offensive for children”? Wow, this is why Arkansas fucking sucks.

I kind of get why people would raise their eyebrows at a very young girl (Dakota Fanning) posing on a magazine cover full of sex tips and I get how a vagina would get censored (and am kind of put off by the blatant objectification of it) but most of these are fine.
The pregnancy ones as I remember were less about them being naked and more about them showing their “baby bump” which to me is completely idiotic. The topless guy is also fine and I actually really like the image. I’d be fine with it even if it was a woman. It’s not really a sexual image and nipples are just nipples. As for the one with Lady GaGa and the naked dude, I think people are put off by the seemingly reversed gender roles. The guy is in a very traditionally feminine pose, which I don’t think people would have given a second glance if it was a woman and Gaga is grabbing her crotch, seen as crude when done by a woman. The Elton John cover is cute and the fact that people were offended by it makes me want to punch a wall.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - You and I must’ve come from the same era. lol!
I remember that cover of Demi Moore when she was pregnant with her second child and the controversy it caused. She was the one who started the nude, pregnant trend. Jeez, people still get uptight over the silliest things.

That’s America for you.

Amazing…people love sex…but hate looking at the by product.
I thought the Moore cover was gorgeous…but I guess I’m supposed to cheer for bulimic pre-adolescents…which NO ONE resembles.

There’s nothing wrong with nudity on a magazine, as long as it’s not being used to try to entice people. Then again, I’m not even offended by pictures that are trying to be pornographic, so maybe my viewpoint doesn’t count.

Honestly, I think just because it’s a fashion magazine doesn’t mean it has to be risque and full of nudity. I would think fashion is more about clothes… If it was perfectly acceptable for society to go about their business in public completely nude, I think the concept of fashion would be altered dramatically.
