How long has that “My grandma still can’t work her answering machine!” joke been going on? There’s some truth to it, though. We have to admit that some of our elders aren’t the most adept at technology, especially at an age where the most common and user-friendly gadgets are constantly updated and endlessly perfected. I can’t even understand smart phones half the time, so how does my mother fare?
But the combination of technological naivete and parental discussion is straight-up hilarious. And exchanging words via text in general is a new form of communication that parents may not be hip to just yet, so their advice and words of wisdom comes off funnier than ever. Click through for some texts from moms, some ridiculous and some surprisingly clever!
My mom does not have a cell phone anymore. And by “anymore”, I mean she had one for two days and didn’t understand how to use the damn thing what all the hullabaloo was about and returned it. But, Facebook is a medium she often visits and she tends to leave some rather embarrassing notes on my wall. Maybe she doesn’t realize walls are for general greetings… “Leslie, your vision insurance payment is due on the 1st, don’t forget like always.” “Leslie, thank for remembering my birthday. Get your oil changed.”
Just call me, mom. Smoochies and see you soon!
Do you text with your mom? Any choice texts that make you LOL?

LOL! Those were hilarious!
And no, I am not going to be learning to text my kids. I shudder at the likely outcome of that!

Really? There are people who have parents that are so clueless they can’t type on a phone? No wonder the world is a sad, sad place. I did find the coming out and push pop conversations to be hilarious. Maybe my parents are exceptions considering my mom’s background in computer programing and building computers.

My mom is not able to type anything on her mobile phone. It’s sometimes difficult for her to type a number.
She’s not clueless she just doesn’t care about it.

the sad thing is, i actually understood what the mom with the big fingers was trying to type.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - a lot of parents can’t use computers and phones. My dad has never owned a phone in his life and has no idea how to even switch one on.

@daydreams_nightmares@xanga - I think my friends and I just have geeky mutant parents. My parents have had phones since they stopped being for doctors and drug dealers.

I just read the thing about Facebook….LOL. I’ve seen people’s parents do that and I am thankful my mom is the one that taught me about the internet (more than 20 years ago [damn I am old]) and I don’t have to worry about her doing stuff like that unless of course she is trolling me.

Just awhile ago I talked my mom into getting a smart phone. She ended up getting the same phone as me (Droid Razr) It was a big step up from her little sliding phone. The only bad part was every single day she was calling me to have her come “fix” her phone because she couldn’t figure it out. She’s doing really good with it now but my step-dad keeps taking it to play the games she has :p He’s obsessed with the coin drop and slots games.
They also have my old laptop (but no internet). The other day I was over there watching TV and my step dad goes “I need to get a computer so I can do that!” I was like “No dad, you have a computer… You need internet!” Lol it’s so funny me being the one to “teach” them :p

@Erika_Steele@xanga - I know a lot of parents that don’t know how to text. Mine included. It’s easy to understand because cell phones were part of our generation, not so much our parents’. Even when I was in high school only a handful of people had cell phones, and now they’re everywhere. It’s not that they’re clueless, they just didn’t grow up with it like we did. My dad is very well educated and held a job as senior engineer for more than 25 years for a company that engineered and manufactured military aircraft, so he’s far from clueless, but he can’t operate a simple flip phone because it’s technology beyond his time. My mom can only use her iPhone because all she has to do is use Siri to set reminders, make phone calls, send text messages, etc. She doesn’t know how to access any of that, but it doesn’t mean she’s clueless. She’s just proud she knows how to access Siri. It doesn’t make the world a sad place at all. What makes it sad is when people think that EVERYBODY knows how to use today’s technology because it’s so freaking common and they grew up with it. I have a seven-year-old cousin who can’t believe that we didn’t have computers growing up and actually played outside.

@PoolMunky@xanga - as I said to the other person that replied to me, maybe my (close) friends and I have parents that are mutants. None of my friends have parents that can’t use technology either. My mom taught me how to use the internet 20+ years ago (she still teases me for saying it would never catch on). My parents had the first generation of cellphones and told me that one day most people won’t have landlines (another idea I found to be far fetched when I was in high school). I am almost 40 so I am fully aware that people didn’t always have the technology we have now. I just find it odd that people find it difficult to use…but then again, even in the 80s, I had computers (those were difficult to use)…and when I was really little in the 70s I had a functioning toy typewriter and a calculator (back when they were insanely expensive). I was being sarcastic with the sad place comment btw.

@At_Sixes_And_Sevens@xanga - How do you know they’re fake? I wouldn’t put it past the millions of moms and dads out there to say outlandish things and text with auto correct.
