If you’ve ever seen the movie Taken, then you know that only a father like Liam Neeson could hunt down the bad guys who took his daughter. And if your dad (or mom) isn’t quite at that level of crazy/awesome, then you might not want to rely on your parents to save you in a similar situation. In YouTube group Captain Hippo’s spoof of Taken, they show how the “average” father might react in such a situation.
In the movie, Liam Neeson’s character must hunt down and kill the men who kidnap his daughter and her friends. He is resourceful, unrelenting, and totally awesome. But the average parent wouldn’t even know where to start in that situation— and in this spoof, we see a hilarious dramatization of the “normal dad” trying (and failing) to rescue his son. Maybe some things are better left to Hollywood actors.

I think what made this more acceptable as humor in people’s eyes isn’t so much the dad’s reactions but the fact that it was a son and not a daughter. Had it been a daughter, I think people would be more inclined to treat the father as an insensitive asshole.

My dad would actually get to the right place, then fall asleep in the parking lot listening to NPR, and when I fought my own way out of there, he’d wake up right when I got to the car and tell me he just got there.
