Lana Del Rey is no stranger to musical controversy, and has opened herself up to criticism yet again. This time, she’s done so by covering Nirvana’s hit song “Heart Shaped Box.” It’s hard to please everyone when covering a classic, and plenty of Nirvana fans are perturbed by Lana’s actions. But is her cover really that bad? I don’t think so. Give it a listen and tell us what you think!
Lana has said before that Kurt Cobain was one of her childhood idols, and in an interview last year, she mentioned: “When I was 11, I saw Kurt Cobain singing ‘Heart Shaped Box’ on MTV and it really stopped me dead in my tracks.” And I think she’s done a great tribute to her idol with this version of the song. I like the pipes Del Rey has, and I think they suit this tune well and give it an interesting, haunting spin. [via Sugarscape]

Okay, this is good. Definitely nowhere nearly as bad as the musically-shoving-a-square-peg-into-a-triangular-hole “Smells Like Teen Spirit” cover by Miley Cyrus. (Or the neutered “Fight the Power” cover by Vanilla Ice. UGH. -_-)

It’s OK. She has a nice voice, but she is a boring singer. She turned the song into a lullaby and the teenager that lives inside of me wanted to hear the anger and rage.

I just really like Kurt Cobain’s voice, so for me, it was just a less-good version…a good song but missing that voice.
To be “disgusted” simply by another person’s voice singing a song that was better before is ridiculously petty and self-righteous.
