I love looking at all the new fashion ads for this fall, especially with all the September issues coming out.
In the past few days, there has been a lot of hype around the new Marc New York ad that seems to resemble an imagined scene from popular fiction ’50 Shades of Grey’.
Personally, I can only vaguely see the resemblance. As a reader of the infamous trilogy, when I imagine a scene from one of the novels, this is not what I picture. The woman, who I assume has to be a recreation of Anastasia Steele, the female protagonist. In the novels Anastasia is seen as a meek timid young woman, not the half naked sexpot that is pictured above.
Plus, I just can’t seem to picture anyone but Ian Somerhalder as Christian Grey, but that’s a different story…
I understand this is only an inspiration, but a half naked man and woman and some grey walls don’t paint a convincing picture to me. Nonetheless, as a standalone ad outside of the novels, I think this is a captivating shot. I just can’t see it applied to the novels.
Lovelies, do you see the ’50 Shades Of Grey’ resemblance in this ad? How would you style an ad based on your favorite novel?

i never read the book so maybe it’s supposed to be some small thing i’m not picking up on, but otherwise no

I don’t see it. His apartment in the books seems so much more luxurious than this one in the ad. This looks like a locker room.

I am the reason why the Amazon review of that book dropped from 4 stars to 3 stars.

Ian Somerhalder!!! I’ve never read the books but I know the gist of them and I want him to be Christian.

I don’t see it at all. I’m a little more than half way through the final book, and there’s no way this ad is sending the “Fifty Shades” vibe, no matter how nice of an ad it is.
