I have no idea how popular or unknown this book ended up being, but Yann Martel’s Life Of Pi has been one of my favorite books since I read it a few years ago. It’s a coming of age story that focuses on a boy lost at sea, on a lifeboat with animals from his family’s zoo that survived a shipwreck. It has magical realism, amazing lessons any human can draw from, and a really beautiful ending. I had heard rumblings that a movie was in the works, but you know how these things are — you hear that kind of stuff all the time and then nothing comes of it. Well today an official trailer for the film was released, and it looks as epically beautiful as the book was in my head. Watch the trailer below!
There are many interpretations of the meanings of all the characters and events in this book, but it appears that the movie intends to tell the story just as it is in Yann Martel’s prose. I hope, at least, that it doesn’t try to assume anything. The story is so beautifully edited. Regardless, I have a feeling we can expect a great soundtrack and sublime visuals. Director Ang Lee has just a few significant titles under his belt including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain for which he won an Oscar… so I think the film is in good hands. The film hits theaters November 21.
