People are bending over backwards in London to prepare for the Olympics, and businesses are pulling every move they can to make a profit off the event. While this usually means selling auspicious memorabilia and other tourist-friendly items, the brand Maiden is taking a more controversial route with these “fat American family” totes. So is this accessory funny, or offensive and disrespectful?
The “fat American family” tote isn’t the only snarky bag Maiden has to offer, as you can see from the one above. Personally, I don’t really care about the insult, but some Americans are rather upset. As the source mentions, “Americans have a 34.7% rate of obesity compared to the UK’s 26.1%. So can we both stop stuffing our faces for a bit and make fun of someone else?” Or perhaps just relax and turn on the games? [via Fashionista]
What do you think of this tote? Is it offensive?

Americans will be too preoccupied wondering what a “flat” is to be offended.
guest
I wouldn’t have expected less from England.

It’s just Europeans stooping to new lows because they know the American Olympians are going to cream everyone in the games.
guest
They’re totally hating.
guest
RUDE.

The American women’s soccer team just creamed the French after being down 2 – 0.
guest
Lol, i think it’s funny
guest
Oh please, it’s not like you lot don’t bash us for having “bad teeth” or whatever. Learn to laugh at yourselves.
guest
I think it’s funny.
Based on what I see when I go outside… fat is synonymous with American these days.
guest
Eh, I don’t think the statement is severe enough to imply that Americans are fat as a general population.
But even if it did, America is kinda fat. But so is the UK.
Also, it’s the Olympics. Are we really going to get all concerned over the typical jabs at each other?
guest
I’m not offended… Then again, I’m not fat so…

As Chris Titus says, “Now, you can get mad at that joke….or you can get a treadmill. Your choice.”

Haven’t there been specific instances where America has been criticized for propagating and making fun of British stereotypes? I’m American. This isn’t really something to be offended about…What we should be offended about are our actual obesity rates.
guest
Come on… We make fun of every single friggin country out there for something or another. Take a joke. God America sucks sometimes. I swear I’m going to move to like Australia or something.
guest
I think it’s hilarious. Also, like some of the other commenters noted, people need to chill the eff out. This really is not that serious.
guest
Funny, and I am fat!!!
guest
Personally, if I were Britain I would ban Americans from going to the Olympics or visiting in general. They were a peaceful nation minding their own business until they got involved with the United States which resulted in the horrendous terrorist attack on 07-07-2005.
guest
I don’t think it’s funny, but I’m not offended. Just looks like a lame, ugly bag.

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga -
Pfft. Flats are why we keep a spare tire in the trunk, and have AAA memberships. Duh.
guest
I’m a little offended I won’t lie. Just because it just doesn’t make any sense? Like if it was clever, that’s one thing, but who walks around with a bag saying their renting their place out to fat people?? American or not. And it’s weird were known as the “fat” nation when they aren’t that far from us. I don’t make fun of other countries or make stereotypes either, so I guess I’m allowed to say that.
guest
HAHAHAHAHHAHA its hilarious! Yes, we have fat people in England. But we don’t have fatness to the extent of the Americans. You have like 800lb people over there its insane!
guest
WANT. and yes, i’m fat.
guest
If I was British I’d be thrilled to be carrying either of those, and I’m a dude. Epic fucking WIN.

More sad than anything else because it IS the truth. American’s are fat. It’s so normal to have huge-sized everything: cars, fast food meals and drinks, appetites, houses, etc.
