Sure, lots of people have tried public displays of dance (think flash mobs). But these professional dancers have decided to take it to the next level — with beautiful results!

I find the pictures in this project (entitled Dancers Among Us) so wonderful to look at, just because the settings are so ordinary. The dancers in the photographs aren’t in any special costumes or makeup — they’re just being awesome dancers in their street clothes. As a former dancer myself, I appreciate the physical effort that was likely necessary to do these moves in clothes that weren’t necessarily built for extreme movement. Have you ever tried doing the splits while wearing jeans?

The photographer behind the project describes the entire thing as a celebration of fun:

The images are infused with a humor and joyfulness that make the viewer feel good. The carefree nature of the work is a welcome antidote to the persistent anxiety that defines many people’s lives.

Dancers Among Us now involves hundreds of dancers, photographed everywhere from the New York subway system to the beaches of Florida. And now, there’s an entire photography book about the project that’s available for pre-order. But here are some you can enjoy for free— I guarantee that you’ll find yourself saying, “How on Earth did they pull that off??”

What do you think of these pictures? Any suggestions for new places the dancers can pose at?
