And you’re right, there hasn’t been any real controversy—yet. But I think there’s a possibility for it, when we raise questions like…
+ How do designers feel about DIY?
+ What’s the difference between DIY and knockoff?
+ Is it okay to make a profit on DIY projects?
WHAT IS DIY?
Let’s start at the beginning. If you haven’t heard of it before, DIY is an acronym for “do-it-yourself.” It is used widely among crafters and people of other various hands-on professions (ever heard of DIY Network?).
The main purpose of DIY in fashion is for the “everyman” (or woman) to have access to the latest trends and styles without breaking the bank. The DIY blogging community has grown significantly over the past few years, a fact likely tied to the U.S.’s current economic state. DIYers create tutorials for clothing and accessories inspired by runway and street trends.

i think DIY is awesome, personally im not so talented so im a slave to the stores, but designers shouldn’t have an issue with it, causeregardless no two outfits are the same, there’s always going to be a unique twist.

I totally read this as ‘DIY conservatory’ and now I’m a little disappointed.
I am a huge DIYer though. I stud everything.

People shouldn’t feel ashamed to make DIY crafts and such. It’s affordable and fun.

I use DIY for things such as building my own furniture, household repairs, etc.

diy doesn’t have to be imitation, there’s plenty that aren’t. Also, most people who enjoy diy will be proud to say yeah I made it myself and therefore not trying to pass it off as real. DIY will of course NEVER be industrial/commercial grade and therefore will be more easily spotted as home made, or at least not authentic. LASTLY! I’m pretty sure most designers have done DIYs…i mean think about it.

It’s only an issue if there’s a violation of its legality (pertaining to patents/patent rights). Otherwise, it’s not a big deal. At all.

DIY is just making something for yourself, like I make cloth diapers and my dad is pretty good at anything construction related even though he has no formal training.
Knockoffs are cheap imitations… not cool. Please don’t lump the two together.

@Cho_0705@xanga - it depends upon the DIYer and the project. After working in the furniture industry for 7 years, I built a bar that is of medium quality, which is better than the cheap stuff, but not as good as the high end stuff. It’s all in the amount of skill/effort you want to put into something.
