Prim collared shirts are huge this season, playing off of the menswear trends of the past year but with a summery twist. And since the buttoned-up look can get school-uniform-ish in a hurry, many designers are taking it upon themselves to add some edge to the look with vintage-inspired details to dress up your collar. From brooches to bib necklaces to collar tips, there’s a style detail to set off any outfit, and here are some of my (affordable) favorites.
Chain-link collar tips. This is essentially two small pins connected with a chain. Pin it to each side of your collar for an unexpected accessory that’s not ostentatious. And this one from Asos is only $9.94.
Dressy collar tips. While the chain-tips could take your your look up a notch on the hipness scale, these pearly collar tips are decidedly girly and sweet. $13.26 from Asos.
Brooches. If you’re a vintage-loving gal, picking out a brooch to dress up your collar is a lot of fun and looks great. To me it finishes off a look in a way only certain girls can pull off, put when they do it’s a great look. This one is $7.13 from Etsy.
Bib necklaces. This one, for $8.80 at Forever 21, fits snugly under your collar to add a textural detail at the “bib” of your shirt, but is lightweight enough that it won’t fold your collar down. That’s the trick to finding a great collar-necklace that you can wear comfortably all day — make sure it’s lightweight.
Western collar tips. Like the lead photo, these have become probably the most widely-produced collar accessory since the trend hit. Designers are putting them on shirts when you buy them, but then the shirts themselves are dry-clean only just because of the metal tips. A better way to go about it is to buy separate tips that you can remove to wash the shirt. The best part is that they’re not a “hip” thing, per se. You can find this pair, for example, on eBay for $9.99.
These trends are a throwback to a similar wave in the late ’80s, but with more fitted pieces that can go from day to evening. And most of these styles are finally making their way into the mortal realm of affordability, so trying these trends won’t put you in debt.
Woul you try any of these collar details?
