I’ve never regarded the word “hipster” as a pejorative. Just like anything else, the word has its clichés and its negative implications, but I can’t deny certain things: I was once very pretentious about bands I liked; I love that I have to wear glasses because they’re a great accessory; I have facial piercings and stretched ears; I might have a narwhal tattooed on my leg… okay yes, I do. I think anything can be awesome as long as it’s sincere, and I was born a sincere misfit… and misfits tend to find their way into hipster-dom.
That said, this meme Sad Hipster, makes me laugh a lot. While the kid doesn’t scream hipster with his appearance, it’s really close enough, because the captions are worth it. Take a look, and see if you relate to any of these. I know I’m guilty.
This happened to me last week. Rewatching an episode of Friday Night Lights my friend (who is younger than I am and books bands for a living) pointed out that the song that was playing was a Daniel Johnston cover. I’ve seen Daniel Johnston live, twice. I’ve met him! And yet I’m too busy to know his full catalogue of songs. It’s called growing up, I guess. I’m slowly trading in my hipster points for being a functioning adult. And the best thing to do about it …is laugh.
Does Sad Hipster remind you of anyone you know?
