I own one Coach bag that my mom bought me for Christmas about three years ago, and all of my other bags that I use more frequently have been bought for $40 or less. But once my dad took me school shopping my freshman year of high school for a new wardrobe for a new school, and I bought a knock-off Kate Spade purse on the streets of Chinatown. There’s a lot of controversy surrounding the idea of fake designer items that are sold for a fraction of their price, and I’m really torn about how I feel about them.
On one side of the coin, I will not purchase something as extravagant as a real designer purse for hundreds of dollars in fear of it getting stolen or ruined. The novelty of having an expensive bag makes me feel great, but I barely even use my Coach bag. I opt for cheaper bags that I can take out in the rain, snow, sleet or hail and not care about what happens to them. Knock-off bags provide me with the idea of a luxury item without the cost, but some are purchased illegally and resold, so you have to be careful about fake merchandise. Some resemble the originals so closely that only an expert would be able to spot the difference.
What’s your take on knock-off bags? Are you for or against owning one?

I think it kind of depends on the scenario….
I’m against: a. fake logosb. knock offs being produced in inhumane factories
but I am for:a. fake leather b. look a likes (purses that resemble the design of a luxury brand retailer without logos)

@Cho_0705@xanga - this is exactly what I was going to say. Designer logos should not be reproduced. Designer look alike bags are great so long as logos aren’t being copied.

I’m against knock off bags. Often times the sales of these knock offs are money into the black market, wars, and slavery.
Besides…whenever a woman comes up next to me with a fake bag, I usually mentally call them out. There’s no shame in not being able to afford a designer bag. But to fake having the funds for it? I think not!
There’s also other individuals who opt to NOT buy designer bags and are still quite the fashionista. Don’t let the clothes make you!

I’m on the fence about it. Part of me feels bad for the designer, but the other part thinks its ridiculous to have to spend hundreds on a purse that I’ll always be nervous about messing up.
But I don’t like most designer bags. I think $30 ones from Forever21 are cute enough for me!

I don’t have a problem with designer-inspired purses, as long as they are manufactured legally and the bags do not bear fake logos. I did once like Coach purses, but now I feel they are kind of silly looking with all the C’s on the bag…even though my first name starts with C. Now I think it is ridiculous to spend hundreds of dollars on a purse–there are many cute and functional purses available for sale that cost a fraction of the price. You can buy a Nine West bag rather than a Kate Spade and still have a very nice purse. (I would rather carry the Nine West instead of a “Cate Spade” purse.) My sister and I used to jokingly call those black market knockoffs “Goach” and “Cucci” purses.

I’m against knock off bags AND ridiculously expensive bags. Most of the designer bags, wallets, and wristlets I own were given to me as gifts. I’m sure if I really like a bag, I will pay top dollar for it. I’m still getting used to the whole idea of buying nice things for myself.

Really? You’re torn over if it’s worth it or not?! Fake bags are stolen designs and patterns made in sweat shops! The obvious answer is that any fake or counterfeit item is illegal and wrong. Period.

people, who wear knockoff logos, bags/purses, sunglasses, etc, do that to try to look wannabe rich and more “high class,” but it makes them look tackier and just other derivatives of lame. knockoffs of the logos and very similar designs of the original designers cheapen the brand. it makes it affordable for average folks but the point of luxury goods, is that it is “elite” and meant to be expensive enough so that the average person won’t be easily able to afford it, so it won’t be widely distributed, but remain limited edition. having it easily available defeats the elitism of owning big designer brands, so seeing so many others having the same or similar purses or whatever other knockoff, isn’t anything that special and loses the elite appeal
it might make people want to go out and buy themselves a knockoff to join in on the trend, but for others, it would annoy me and I wouldn’t want what every other person can easily get. the once unattainable for most luxury is now affordable luxury, which sounds great for some, but it is no longer limited edition, but everywhere advertisement.

eww knock off bags…
if you cant afford it…by would you still wanna spend $100+ on a AA / AAA+ quality replica ?
why not save up until you have enough for the real thing

I would never carry a knockoff bag/purse, but I won’t judge a person if they do (but I will call them them out in my head if they give me reason to. Example, this girl walked around like she was the shit in high school with her OBVIOUSLY pleather Coach bag).

one would think that an expensive bag would be invincible through rain and snow but i wouldn’t want to worry every second while wearing it about it getting stolen.
i saw an episode of the Revolution and Tim Gunn said that purchasing knock-offs is i guess promoting plagiarizing or stealing. he said he went all the way to the court to make the selling of them illegal.
but i thought about it, everybody knows the original designer of a knock-off. so the knock-off maker is not getting any credit. and the designers are already rich enough.

I don’t spend more than $30 dollars on a handbag. I don’t care if it’s a knock-off or not. I just don’t see the point in spending hundreds of dollar on a purse.

I like to own unique bags that nobody else down the streeet has… no thank you.

Well first of knock-offs are illegal. And second off their tacky. If you can’t afford Coach or Louie or whatever don’t buy a knockoff. There are plenty of bags out there that are cute and affordable that aren’t designer and don’t look as fake and disgusting as a knockoff.

I’m that person with expensive purses and treats them like $40 bags

What’s the point of buying a knock off? I’m fine with my $40 purses haha. I can’t imagine spending more than $40. There’s this one Louis Vuitton purse that I’m absolutely in love with, but I refuse to spend $700 on it, and if I found a knock off for way cheaper I still wouldn’t buy it. That totally ruins the point in my opinion. I just feel like it’s tacky and that the people carrying them are trying to prove some kind of point.

I’m against knock-offs. It’s awful. Plus they mostly do look fake. Just buy the real thing if you want something pretty. If you can’t afford it, buy some other bags.

coach is ugly and not that high end anyway.
i would spend good money on a bag that has been made from high quality material and precision.
i don’t see the reason why anyone would want a knock off. just get a different bag.

I used to have a few knockoffs, but I only got them because I really liked the designs, and not because I wanted to show off the logos, but now, since I’m a bit older(24) now, I don’t wear them anyone because knockoffs ALWAYS look cheap, and I worry that if I wear knockoffs, people will think my real bags are knockoffs too.
p.s. I think more expensive bags(up to a point) have better quality

I am against total knock-offs.
I wouldn’t do it, alone because it’s not legal. Usually these products are produced by large criminal organizations that I don’t want to support. I also don’t want to be caught with an illegal product (and have it taken away, which can happen).
Of course legal companies also abuse their employees and sort of enslave people in poorer countries but at least some of the money will go to actual employees who have their legal vacation and sick days and probably health insurance, and they are more easily controlled by the public bc they are legal.
Also in all fairness, the specific idea belongs to them. In a way this is all kind of silly, but if I say it is ok to steal an idea (and logo), I can also just go and steal the bag.
That being said, I find “brandism” ridiculous anyway. With a knock off I would still support the idea that having a ‘c’ or the famous LV on a bag is more awesome than just looking good, and i just don’t think this is the case.
The solution is just looking for other things that are cheaper .

Near-lookalikes are fine, but if someone is actually trying to pass off their product as real when it’s not, I don’t want to support that.
I actually own a Kate Spade bag because my sister bought it for me during Kate Spade’s 70% off sample sale. It may not be easy to find, but sometimes you can find actual designer bags for much cheaper than they normally retail.

Ew, knockoffs. Stop tryna pretend your (lack of) money talks

i could really care less about brand names i usually buy a cheap purse that i like (color style) not becuase of brand. This being said i would buy a cheap knock off (i have not really dont care and have pleanty of cheap purses i like)- if i like it, not because i want a certain image but because i like the flippin thing! I dont get people who pay hundreds on a purse when you can get one just like it for 40. Unless its made out of some insaine materials (which i dont believe most are) it should cost the same as any other damn purse. I dont care who designed it or what name is on it. But im not gonna buy one out of someones trunk or anything shady like that, i go to stores like every other normal person.
