I would not take a decent photo as a child. Ever the troublemaker, most toddler pictures feature me squirming, sticking my tongue out or both. (My parents have one studio shot where I even managed to stick it out just enough so no one noticed until our prints arrived.) Usually it’s difficult to manage an unruly child without a parent in the photo, but moms in Victorian times had a solution: just hide under a blanket! And the results were eerie. Check out this gallery of spooky-looking “ghost mother” photos and decide if these moms picked a good tactic or not!
While it’s interesting to see these relics of years past, it totally looks like specters from the underworld are rising up to steal these kids. Though some of these kids look like they want to steal my soul, so maybe it’s appropriate. Head on over to the source to see more strange shots! [via io9]

Creepy! Those are some impressive looking christening gowns. Times have changed My friends who have children take some really adorable pics of their kids, the kids love to ham it up for the camera! Even little babies will smile for the camera.

That’s kind of impressive since these babies have to stay still at least for five minutes with the kinds of cameras they used back then. Because of their blurry hands, eyes, and feet…looks like some babies must have fidgeted a little.
Good to know that these aren’t post-mortem photos XD

Um, they still have to do this now for some kids. It just looks less creepy because the techniques and technology have moved on.

what? this is mad weird….. although i’m not gonna lie, my mom was rocking some pretty bad 90′s hair in my baby pictures. Haha, she probably wishes now she could have had a blanket :p

I wonder if people will ever look at pictures of us today and think they’re creepy.

I recall pictures they did of deceased family members sitting upright… and hte living family members got in on the picture too. What strange thought process.

that is pretty creepy

Not half as creepy as post mortem photography/memento mori, a custom where people photograph the dead in a setting as if they were still alive in most cases.

We used to have one of those pictures up in our den (it was my mom’s great-great uncle, and her great-great-great aunt was sitting under a blanket). I was so creeped out by it that I kept on taking it down and putting it under the couch, in a box, behind the TV, anywhere where I could see it.

I have to remind myself that at least these mothers are alive during the picture… Still kinda creepy…
