Many of us were both physically and socially awkward in middle school. (And if you weren’t, color me jealous!) And while the, “Celebrities! They’re just like us!” line tends to get old, sometimes it’s very, very true. Take a look at Hollywood darlings Rashida Jones and Zooey Deschanel. Few would deny that they’re two of the most gorgeous women on TV, and it’s hard to believe that either went through an awkward phase. As someone who was bullied for my looks in school, I can honestly say that these belong in some sort of “It Gets Better” project. Adolescence is rough and seemingly never-ending when you look awkward, and I would have loved to know there was a light at the end of the tunnel! And while the Internet may be filled with things that are no good for middle school students to see, at least it also provides them with hopeful images like these. [via Buzzfeed]

They were never ugly ducklings… I find it hard to not see the beauty in them. They still have the same features just with child chub on the cheeks.
Yeah kids get bullied about their looks but not necessarily because they are “ugly” but because they don’t act like every one else and that makes them “weird”.
If people called you ugly back in the day it’s because they were just uncomfortable with you not being just like the rest of them.

Pssh, they were nowhere NEAR “ugly ducklings.” At best, they were perfectly average young children :-/ Ooh, shocker, kids in elementary school weren’t all done up and glamorous!

I refused to look at Rashida Jones for a while because that’s my SO’s celebrity crush and is on his list of celebrities he’s allowed to sleep with if given the chance (reference to Friends lol) haha… She’s really beautiful without having to look super sexy.
And I just love Zooey.

Geez, you have harsh criteria for what constitutes an “ugly duckling.” But it looks like Rashida Jones had a nose job. This gives me hope that with enough plastic surgery, I too can be gorgeous! Hurray!

I was awkward and a lot of kids with me were awkward, but most went through a blossoming phase in the next few years. What it looks like they are saying here is that unprofessionally made-up kids are ugly compared to professionally made up, dressed, hair styled and shot by model photographers instead of school year-book photographers.
