Let’s face it: most of us are trying to live a healthier lifestyle — and it’s not always easy. But, with all the different diets and “healthier” food products out there, it gets mind-boggling! Who can keep up??
So, regular cow’s milk is one of the items I have eliminated from my diet — not only because I feel better without it, but I also prefer the taste of the alternatives. Like myself, there are many reasons to give up dairy and there are really yummy options out there if you decide to do so! I have listed 4 of my favorite milk alternatives that taste great and are great for you!
This is probably the most popular – and for good reason! You can even find soy coffee creamer — which is delicious. Soy milk not only offers a great source of protein, but it’s less fattening than regular milk (depending on which one you buy).
Coconut Milk
Coconut milk is great if you are vegan and has a high amount of protein compared to the other alternatives. Plus, the flavor is probably the best out of other types of milk.
Almond Milk
Almond milk is definitely my favorite of all the alternatives. It’s really low in calories and have many sources of nutrients than most of the other options.
Rice Milk
Like almond milk, rice milk is very low in fat and has many sources of nutrients. However, it also is great if you have any kind of allergies, such as nut or soy. It also helps that it’s pretty delicious too!
What are your favorite milk alternatives?

@flapper_femme_fatale@xanga - I agree. The only downside is that it can make me phlegmy. But I’ve tried both soy and almond milk and disliked both – almond would make me feel nauseous (any brand) if I drank more than a tiny amount (eating too many almonds does the same for me, doesn’t happen with other nuts), and soy just tasted weird and had a weird texture. And I’ve heard that soy is also not necessarily the best alternative either but I can’t remember why. Oh, rice milk tastes like shit too in terms of texture and regular intake. In tiny amounts it’s okay, but if I’m drinking something that’s supposed to be milk I’m gonna drink a big heaping glass of it.

I despise anything besides cow milk.

I don’t really like rice milk. I’ve had Almond Silk Milk, however, which is delicious! Coconut milk sounds good too

I’ve had coconut milk and I liked it alright. I use it more as an ingredient in smoothies and such. I absolutely love almond milk, and I enjoy soy milk. I’ve never had rice milk. I don’t really like regular cow’s milk by itself, so all the alternatives make nice healthy drinks for me. It also works well when you have friends who are lactose intolerant, because you can share.

Soy milk is awesome! But Almond milk just doesn’t taste right. And I’m not a big fan of coconut.. And rice milk? Does it taste like rice with cream? Haha.

@ashleynicole - agreed with the phlegm. i probably drink a glass a day on average. when i was younger, i could go through two or three gallons in a week. i was never a big soda drinker growing up, and i didn’t like water because it was so flavorless. so while most kids enjoyed sugary drinks, i chugged milk like it was going out of style. i tried some soy cream for my coffee once… that’s as close as i’ve gotten.
i’d love to try goat’s milk, because i’m in love with goat cheese.

@flapper_femme_fatale@xanga - I also used to drink it a lot. Drank it less in later years but that’s mostly due to being lazy – I also don’t drink much water haha.

@ashleynicole - hehe i drink water more now that i’ve discovered the joys of lemon juice. i’ve also convinced myself that since tea is just leaves steeped in water, it counts

i love almond milk, it has now replaced regular milk for me. coconut milk is awesome too, but some can be really water-y. soy milk i feel is a little too rich for me and only drink it alone or in coffee. not a fan of rice milk, it’s too watery and just taste like raw rice. i have nothing against regular milk and i used to regularly drink it. i just like these alternatives because they don’t expire as fast lol! living alone i don’t drink even the smaller containers of milk fast enough sometimes so this is great for me, no wasting! i still buy regular milk from time to time.

Cows milk makes me want to vomit…the smell is just…bleurgh. I’m fine if it’s baked into something or if it’s in chocolate or something, but the idea of sitting down and drinking a glass of milk from another species makes me queasy. I hated it growing up too. My favourite is oat milk – I used to drink soy but it’s not that good for you in large amounts, so when my dad moved over to oat milk I tried it, and I love it

I want to try coconut milk & probably will when I move out & actually have control of the groceries I buy. I love silk chocolate milk but I’m not crazy about the other flavors. But I will never go completely vegan, however I plan on having chickens & maybe my own cow or goat for milk. But of course, that’s when I actually buy a home. Lol.

I have no problem with cow’s milk. I drink 2% milk, but since my sister is now lactose intolerant, we drink Silk or Lactaid. I took a liking to Lactaid.

I have no problem at all with regular milk. My mom raised me on fat free milk and I didn’t like it too much, but now that I’ve moved out I buy whole milk all the time. So yummy. I’d be willing to try almond milk, but I’ll never totally give up my whole milk.

I’m from WI, there are NO substitutes for the real thing.

I would alternate between cow’s milk and almond milk when I was living on my own to give myself a break from dairy. I enjoyed it a bit more when I started getting the unsweetened almond breeze instead of the original. I also don’t mind soy milk, but I have a soy allergy that apparently is only triggered by concentrated soy like with soy milk. or too much soy sauce. My throat itches like crazy.

I really like vanilla almond milk… especially in my cereal!

We drink milk.. our daughter drinks whole milk.. and it just tastes better.. But then here in Canada there are pretty tight laws when it comes to not using growth hormones or antibiotics in dairy cows.. And the brand we buy is very strict when it comes to following those laws.
sorry there is something about the idea of soy being healthy that makes me laugh.. its all GMO and full of estrogen… and it makes me sick..
Almond Breeze is great for smoothies!! I put chocolate in the bullet with some ice and a banana and my son will drink the whole thing.

Soy isn’t healthy, especially not in soy milk form. Rice milk being healthy is debatable. And both the coconut milk and almond milk that you put up there are highly processed. Coconut milk in the can has fewer added ingredients, and almond milk, well you should probably just make your own if you want it.
I’m such a milk party pooper. :/ If you do drink cow’s milk, it’s best to stick with raw, full-fat milk.

I can’t drink cow’s milk; I am not lactose intolerant, but my body won’t digest dairy. I drink rice and almond milk. Occasionally, I drink soy or coconut milk as well, but my body isn’t a fan of either of those.
guest
I’ve tried all of those. I cannot drink a full container of soy milk, but I do like it once in a while. Same goes for almond milk, only to a lesser extent of enjoyment. Rice milk is gross, even after I tried turning it into agua de horchata. Coconut milk is absolutely disgusting. For what it’s worth, I hate milk milk as well. I drink skim with chocolate and use it for cereal, but whole milk is like drinking snot. I’m getting icky just thinking about it. *shudder*

Soy milk makes me a tad nervous just because of the inclusiveness of the effects of phytoestrogens.

Regular milk gives me a HUGE gas bubble and it hurts so i used to take lactaid pills or drink lactaid but when i couldn’t find it i tried to cut out milk and found smart balance lactose free milk and i’m just happy i can have chocolate milk again.

What does Silk taste like? I’m interested in trying it, but I’m very picky. I don’t drink milk, I use it when eating cereal and cooking but I don’t like the taste of it by itself.
