How much do you spend on makeup? I’m a broke college student so I usually shop the sales — mostly at the drugstore — and ask for more expensive products for Christmas or my birthday. When I watch makeup tutorials I usually watch for technique not the product, since so many gurus use more expensive makeup that I don’t have. However, there’s a tag going around the YouTube beauty guru community forcing gurus and makeup artists to create an entire look using only $20!
Which is your favorite? How much money do you usually spend on makeup?

My typical makeup routine when I do wear makeup is way more than $20 to do the whole face. (Just the tinted moisturizer goes for $40!) But thankfully, the products I normally buy last a long time and been able to work it into my budget. However, I would hate to take all my products for when I travel because they may get lost and I did spend quite a bit. Thank you for posting these videos, these beauty gurus have given me lots of ideas on how to build a decent makeup wardrobe for inexpensive for travel.

While $20 may be enough to look good for a few minutes, for some people, more than $20 is needed for it to last. Or to make sure that it won’t break you out within a day. It’s more important to find the products that work for you, not whether it’s dirt cheap or brand name.

I’m fine spending money on products that I know work and that I know I love. I think it’s silly to look at an initial payment as a means of determining whether it’s expensive – something can be 4 bucks but only last 1-2 months, something can be 35 dollars and last 1-2 years. Much smarter to shop within one’s budget but to remember which products are likely to last a long time and rely on reviews to determine what will likely be worth your purchase.
And if you watch Christine’s (first) video you will see that she actually didn’t like all of the products but thought that “they’d do.” If you buy something of poor quality chances are you’ll use more – either by having to layer, or by there being fallout for eye shadow, or it not lasting and having to reapply. THis goes for any price range. And it shows that price is less important than researching for quality.

Most of my makeup falls in the “cheap drugstore” category. The most expensive thing I use is my Bare Minerals foundation. I’ve been thinking of splurging on some high-quality eye shadow though, since I wear it almost every day and it’s my favourite kind of makeup.

I really don’t go for price when buying stuff that will go on my face… I’ll keep shelling out money for more expensive items if I know they’ll last longer and be kinder to my face in the long run.
Not to say that if the products I liked and needed were under $20, I’d still want to pay more for things. But I am getting closer to finding out exactly what ingredients bother me the most, and I just find that, generally, cheap make up gives you what you pay for.

people are ridiculous, it’s just a challenge to see if they could do it. they aren’t saying that the products are amazing or they’re going to dump their expensive products. it was for a hypothetical situation that involved losing your expensive makeup on a trip.
i use elf makeup and love it (and i love how it doesn’t kill my bank account) but i also splurge on certain products like bb cream and mascara because i’ve found they work well for me.

most of it really depends on trial and error. if you find something that works for you, then it works for you. you don’t have to please someone else with your budget but yourself. I usually mix high end and drugstore make up, but at the end of the day, who really cares about how much your makeup cost?

Surely it’s more important to buy make-up that works for your look and your skin than to buy it because it’s cheap?
