I just got back from seeing Snow White and The Huntsman and this film is now another chapter in my antagonist-loving repertoire. Why? Because when the villain is just too bad-ass, I can’t possibly side with the hero. Sorry, Uncle Walt, but even Ariel didn’t do it for me when she went up against A FRIGGIN’ OCTOPUS WITCH WITH EEL GOONS. I’m aware this preference for evil over good steers me clear of a story’s invaluable lesson yadda yadda yadda SEA SORCERER!
So in this grim take on Snow White, Charlize Theron’s cold stare and malicious, power-thirsty intent was reminiscent of Malefient, my first villainess crush of Snow White‘s sister fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty. The beauty, virtue and journey of the heroine easily cradles my favor but give an icy woman a staff, cunning speech, and a sinisterly chic wardrobe and I am sold. Plus, I can’t look at KStew without thinking of naive ol’ Bella, so that greatly contributed to my evil leaning.
Here are a couple of my favorite villainesses with Maleficent leading the pack.
What are some of your favorite villains, man or woman or… thing? Do you like rooting for the villian?

I almost always root for the villain
I’d love to see Snow White and the Huntsman, but I can’t get over the fact that Stewart is in it even though Theron looks AMAZING as the evil queen :-\

I am more drawn to a story with a strong villain than anything else. I wouldn’t say I root for them, but they make the stories infinitely more interesting.

I like characters with some complexity and not always just the goody good and sometimes they end up being the villain.

You’ll love the new Maleficent movie starring Angelina Jolie then!

Snape is one of my favourite “villains”, even though he obviously turned out good in the end.

Villains are nice ! I love the Joker. He is… unceasable, illogical, very clever : people seems to be his pupits .

I suppose I do have a soft spot for the villain. I almost think they have the right idea because if you’re the hero the world is going to turn on you anyway so you might as well have some fun, instill some fear & make mad money.

completely agree with you here! even as a child I always rooted for the villain, but for this movie especially, charlize theron was SO brilliantly beautiful, and all of the enjoyable scenes in the movie were of her! Several times in the movie I was wishing she’d stop torturing snow white for fun and just kill snowwhite and eat her heart quickly so she could win!

I also loved Charlize Theron in Snow White. Kristen Stewart was better in this movie than the Twilight series. Loved how Charlize made her character more human and relatable, even if she was a villain and evil. All good villains (and good actors for that matter) pull people into their stories. Snape, the Joker… When there’s a really good villain in a story, the story is all the better.

I often notice that the villain is often a more multifaceted and interesting character than the hero usually is. In my “Modern Fairy Tales” class, we analyzed a lot of female villains and concluded that often being aware of one’s own sexuality is often associated with being “evil.” So messed up!
And I’m so excited to see “Snow White and the Huntsman” now.

the villian characters are so much more interesting!
I watched the dark knight with my dad and he was accusing me of rooting for the joker because I thought his character was brilliant and hilarious.

I never really root for the villain, especially not in Disney movies. I can root for the villain if it’s explained why the villain is the way that he/she is and I can easily empathise (and sometimes sympathise) with them. However, usually this isn’t the case in Disney movies because the villain is usually just bad for badness’ sake.
I usually like the “anti-hero” type character. The character that has both good and bad qualities and isn’t trying to save the day, but usually helps in the end. Han Solo type characters, I guess.

i never root for the villain, but since the “protagonist” is played by kristen stewart, i might room for charlize in this one time.

evil is just so much more fun than being good (malicious laughter)!

I root for the proper spelling of villain.

I don’t usually root for the villain, but for this movie I am. Have yet to see it!

I usually root for the anti-heroes and Villians (Charlize as the Evil Queen will be one of them along with the Heath Ledger as the Joker [he embodied the Joker I always imagined]) though there are some heroes I rooted for (Mulan, Rapunzel, etc). For instance, I have always loved Maleficient (I’m glad I’m not the only one who has her as the top villian) cause she’s both a sorceress and a dragon and has a pet raven…now how awesome is that?!

I think I usually root for the protagonists, but I guess that’s just because I know they’ll win. But, it is interesting to me that the little girl I babysit always roots for the villians and seems to identify with them easier. She started laughing like the evil queen in the disney movie of snow white. Then she would push her little brother over and go, “HA HA HA” like the queen did. Interesting how kids think.
